Breast lumps are common, especially in women ages 30 to 50. A number of conditions can result in a lump or lumps in your breast. Most of these conditions are harmless or of minor concern.

Breast cancer usually feels like a hard or firm lump (nodule). It usually is irregular in shape (it does not have smooth edges) and may feel like it is attached (fixed) to skin or tissue deep inside the breast so that it cannot be moved without moving breast tissue. Breast cancer is rarely painful and can occur anywhere in the breast or nipple.

It can be difficult to tell what is causing a lump in your breast. Call your health professional if you feel a new lump in your breast or if you have generalized breast lumpiness and you notice a distinct lump in your breast that is not like the rest of your breast (dominant lump). A dominant lump in the breast is any lump that is new, larger, harder, or different in any other way from the rest of the breast tissue. -

Most breast lumps are benign, but if you have one you MUST get it checked out.

Other people have correctly described the typical characteristics of a cancerous lump; mine however was smooth and painful. Neither my GP or the first doctor I saw at the breast cancer clinic thought it was cancer, but the biopsies confirmed that it was. I had delayed going to the doctor about it because I 'knew' cancerous breast lumps didn't hurt. It turned out to be a 25mm, grade 3 tumour, with 13 lymph nodes affected.

So please, if you have any kind of lump, see a doctor.

Characteristics of cancerous nodules on palpation most often have irregular borders, fixed to the underlying tissue with presence of axillary lymph nodes. The things I have mentioned are only highly suggestive of breast cancer. Lumps that may seem benign may also be cancerous in the presence of other risk factors such as age, etc. In order to have a definite diagnosis of breast cancer, you should have that lump biopsied.

Hi, well there are all kind of different tumors, so be careful anytime you feel something different. IBC (inflammatory breast cancer) will infect your complete breast within a month or two, enlarging it, and also causing nipple inversion. But sometimes tumors can be less than 1cm, and cannot be felt. If you are around 40 you should get your mammograms as recommended. If you are not sure, and you are for example only 25, go get that memmo anyway, even if you have to pay for it yourself, because nothing will be expensive enough to pay for your life. Love Carmen

Most important thing to do is to start self breast exams at puberty. Usually 2 weeks after your period if you have them. Get familiar with your breasts. Then when something out of the ordinary is felt you will know its time to get to the doc and have them examine you.
