There are basically four types of pilot licenses. A sport pilot, a private pilot, a commercial pilot and an Air Transport Pilot or ATP. A commercial pilot can fly for hire but to fly larger passenger planes you require an ATP.

There are plenty of flying schools and colleges with pilot courses. Learning to fly, learning regulations, calculations and navigation and passing the test is not that difficult. You can even find super fast paced schools that will accomplish it in a few months.

The problem is, gaining enough hours to meet the minimum that airlines will accept. Renting an airplane and flying it for hundreds of hours is very expensive and takes the most time.
This is why you will find that most flight instructors are aspiring professional pilots. As flight instructors they are allowed to log hours as the pilot in command. Those hours count towards the total.

To be a commercial airline pilot, it takes years of experience. Most commercial pilots obtained their training and experience in the military. If you have a BS degree, you already have a good start. You could become a commissioned officer in the military and after your service commitment, you could apply to just about any airline you want. The alternative is private training, but it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars (if not hundreds of thousands) and take many years to become qualified, but you will lack the practical experience you could gain in the military.
