I've read that when you want to buy a car you should ask for a carfax report, you should have your mechanic to check it out.

well, how do you ask? do you just say "can i see the carfax report for this car?"

and how would you be able take the car to your mechanic? the dealer lets you do that? how do you go about asking this?

thanks for your time

Just ask the dealer for a carfax for every car you are considering. If they don't do it for you, leave, don't even do it yourself, that is a service they should provide. If they don't have an account with carfax, i wouldn't even consider buying from them.
Find the car you want, and when you are good and ready, negotiate a deal based on the car passing a check up with a mechanic of your choice. The dealer will let you take the car to your local mechanic, you'll have to set this up with him ahead of time, so he is available to do it. If the dealer is not willing to let you take the car, don't even buy it, don't try to get a mechanic to go there, they are better in their own shop. good luck

What I've done in the past (when buying a used car from a dealer) is written down the VIN information of the car I was interested in (it's usually located on the sticker price). Go home, go to carfax myself and enter the information and pay for it myself. I'd rather see the carfax printout that carfax prints rather than the one the dealer has printed out in case of "modifications".

When you test drive the vehicle, simply ask the dealer if you can have your mechanic check out the vehicle and they should have no problems with it. Just tell your mechanic that you have a car you're thinking of buying and would like to have him check it out. Your mechanic should give you a time frame of when he can check it out and with this information, tell the dealer.

The dealer should have no issues with you basically test driving it again to your mechanic.

As for the Carfax, if they have it, they should let you look at it. If they don't, then write down the VIN number and run it yourself. It is cheap enough, if you are serious about the car.

If you want to take the car to a mechanic that you trust, most dealers will let you do that. Once they know you are serious about buying, they will try and work with you to keep from losing the sale.

good luck

You can ask for a report they will probably do it for you if you are serious about buying or you can get it yourself, all you need is the VIN, when you check out the car just bring the mechanic with you and have him test drive it and give it a once over

if you are buying from a dealership they will have all that information. find a reputalble dealer. have someone with you that is a little mechanical. i have never known a mechanic that will leave his shop to go car shopping with you. but you can test drive the car to his shop!! just tell the salesperson that you want to test drive and have your mech. check it out. if they know the car is good they will not have a problem with it. if they don't like the idea, i would say run as fast as you can to a differant dealer.

Call and make sure that they have and use carfax reports and will let you take it to your mechanic before you go.

Then you know they will get in line with what you need.

Just ask...most car dealerships know its coming. When I bought my truck at the end of last year, I simply asked the guy when he said I could test drive it if they minded me taking it by my mechanic. He said no and to take my time. Like, I said, they know its coming. Just ask!

yes, that is how you ask for the car fax report. Take your mechanic with you when you buy the car.

Yes you come out point blank and ask to do both and if they dont want you to see or take the car then they are hiding something and you move on.
