While standing close to my co-worker I would say "Does anyone smell that?. What in the world is that?" I would ask him "Do you smell that? My goodness I hope it's not me that smells like that." Then I would smell my pits and say "It's not me is it you?" (This would force him to smell his own pits.) I think after he took a whiff of himself he would quickly figure it out.

If he's a friend I would tell him as he may not realise how smelly he is.
If he's not a friend I would ask someone who is friendly with both of you to quietly say something.
It's unpleasant and it has to be solved for all workers.

Mention a new deodorant that you just tried that doesn't leave white marks on your clothes. Or mention a new body spray that you tried that drives your lady friends wild.

Lov'n IT! has a good idea. That way there is a better chance of his feelings not getting hurt and you won't have to hold your breath when he walks by.
