why do people wish harm against other people?

It's a kind of built in reaction to having been hurt but I don't understand it on a greater level, when people feel they have a grievance against a country or a religion and then go and bomb and kill innocents. I can't get my head around that mentality.

Usually because they have been harmed by other people.
