At what?...

Kirk was an explorer, an adventurer, a frontiersman....

Picard was a leader, a diplomat, almost an ambassador....

Even though both were captains for the Federation, they had such different roles to play. In Kirk's day, they needed fearless heros. The Federation needed explorers like Kirk.

But by the time Picard came along, much of our area of space had already been explored. They needed someone who could work with other groups, help create peace. The Federation needed Picard to be a diplomat, and he was good at it.

I almost always prefer the originator of a role so I am going with Kirk. I have to admit that for the role of a naval-type captain Picard is more realistic, and I love his voice, but I am old enough to remember the original Star Trek when it first hit the airwaves in the late 60s. It was revolutionary sci-fi back then and Kirk and Spock were an awesome combo.

Personally I consider Spock one of the best TV characters ever created, right up there with Lucy Ricardo and Ralph Kramden. The Kirk role (brave and heroic leading man dedicated to his job) in comparison was very conventional, but I still liked watching Kirk's comic side.

Picard. He was a diplomat that could build trust and good relationships with alien races, even the Romulans. Kirk was too impulsive and prone to act on emotions rather than logic.

Picard is the leader I'd follow to the ends of the universe and who I'd want as an employer.

But Kirk would be oodles more fun. Plus he's got Spock with him.

Defiantly Kirk, he would have shot and been macking on a green chick while Picard is still discussing the issue

Picard, definitely. Kirk did that funny speech thing. And he was always relying on Spock to figure things out. Picard usually figures out everything on his own.

James Tiberius Kirk, by far.

You can't ever do better than the original.

I take my hat off to Patrick Stewart, though, who intentionally never watched an episode of Star Trek: TOS, so that he would not be influenced by Kirk's character.

I like Kirk better, but I think that Picard is a much more realistic character.
