You can use your social security number, unless you run a business that has employees, then you would want to apply for an EIN # with the irs by filling out an SS-4 form.

Many times whether it is a Federal Tax ID or State, you can use your Social Security number. In some cases you need a state tax resale number, which may be different. Check with your state taxing authority.

You need a sales tax ID number. You register with the state to collect and render sales tax. Contact your state's Department of Revenue for further guidance.

FIRST OFF IS THERE IS ANOTHER NUMBER OTHER THAN YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER USE IT! I'M SURE IT'S NOT A TAX ID NUMBER BECAUSE THOSE ARE ONLY ISSUED TO TAX PREPARERS, CPA'S. ETC. IT WILL BE SALES TAX ID NUMBER. YOU GET THAT FROM (STATE) DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE AND YOUR PARISH/COUNTY (YOU GET IT FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD USUALLY).

You can apply for one online through the IRS, see below:
http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html

but, you should set up your business first and document that your business income and expenses are part of the business (and not your personal), which will file its own separate tax form at the end of the year.

I am also attaching a link to the small business advice section of the IRS website:

Probably a state sales tax ID number.

You can probably apply at your state's website for its Department of Revenue.
