Purgatory is not a Biblical doctrine.
The doctrine of Purgatory was established by Gregory I in 593.
The primary Scriptural passage Catholics point to for evidence of Purgatory is 1 Corinthians 3:15, which says, “If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.” The passage (1 Corinthians 3:12-15) is using an illustration of things going through fire as a description of believers’ works being judged. If our works are of good quality “gold, sliver, costly stones,” they will pass through the fire unharmed, and we will be rewarded for them. If our works are of poor quality “wood, hay, and straw,” they will be consumed by the fire, and there will be no reward. The passage does not say that believers pass through the fire, but rather that a believer’s works pass through the fire. 1 Corinthians 3:15 refers to the believer “escaping through the flames,” not “being cleansed by the flames.”

no... the term itself is not even mentioned in the Bible... purgatory was invented due to wrong interpretation of scriptures.. the "purging" of our sins and works will be tried with fire will happen in the Future, during the end times (judgment) when God will try our works by fire, not the person is tried by fire. (I Cor 3:13 - 15)
Ecclesiastes 9:4-5 says that for the living, there is still hope. but for the dead, they will never have anymore reward.
regarding Paul's prayers on his epistles, He's praying for those people who have the same hope as he had... these people are alive.. Surely Paul have known this part of the Scriptures (Ecclesiastes). As it is said also that Onesiphorus oft refreshed him and not ashamed of his chain (He was imprisoned and Onesiphorus visits) 1 Tim. 1:16. book of Maccabees contradict the statement of the bible. Deuterocanonicals were added only later and it doesn't harmonize with the 66 books of the Bible. The one quoted (2 Macc 12:44-45) does not harmonize with what the Bible said.

I want you to know that I enjoy answering this question.
Read carefully... THERE IS NO SCRIPTURE IN THE BIBLE THAT MENTIONS A LIMBO OR PURGATORY.
The bible mentions that "the dead is contious of nothing"... so when you're dead, you're dead! There is no purgatory. What the Bible teaches is that you remain in deep sleep (dead) untill Armogeddon i.e the spiritual war between god's Kingdon and Satan. The rigtheous and the unrigtheous will be raised from the dead and be judged. Read it! It's in Revelations, the last book in the bible.
Purgatory, just like other pagan beliefs like, worshiping the Trinity(ie father, son and holy ghost), making the sign of the cross, worshipping the virgin Mary (after she gave birth to Jesus, she had other children... so she's no longer a virgin), praying with the rosery ect. ect. are religious customs invented by the the Roman Catholic religion.
Non of these so called Christian customs were ever mentioned in the bible.
Take for example.... Christians ( except Seven Day Adventiste and Jehovah Witnesses) celebrate Christmas. They claim that Christmas is the Birthday of Jesus Christ. Where in the Bible said that Hmmm?
It was the Romans (they created the Roman Catholic religion), who wanted a day to celebrate Jesus Christ birth, chose 25th December as his birthday. Take note this is the same day that they worhipped their sun God. Take note also that it was the Romans that crusified Jesus Christ.
There are many so called Christian practices that stem from the Roman Catholic religion, and 75% of it was never mentioned in the Bible and the next 25% is not acurate.
Call me a Roman Catholic hater I don't care.

Nowhere is a "purgatory" mentioned in the Bible . It`s a creation of the Catholic church . According to the Bible , there are only two possible states .
One is to be with God immediately after death if you`re one of the chosen 144,000 .
The other is to lay in a state of death in Hell (where there is NO suffering , knowledge , devising etc) until the Resurrection , at which time all humans will be judged to either everlasting life on a paradise Earth , or to everlasting death .
There are no other "states" mentioned in the Bible .

Well, if you believe that the Pope's word is higher than the Bible, I could understand where you would get that doctrine. But the Pope is just a man, and that Vatican is built on the sand of man's philosophy--so no.
Actually, the Word of God contradicts the doctrine of limbo and or purgatory when it speaks of the deep and wide chasm in the recount of the Rich Man and Lazarus.

No Bible references on those places whatsoever. It is a lie to teach that those places exist.

No, it is not biblical. It was later added in some other doctrine used by other churches as part of their belief system.
