Basically because we Brits were made up from almost all the nations of the world from the beginning of ther first Millenium and therefore British humour has evolved from all these different cultures over the course of time.

Because it is more up-market, funny, intellectual, clever and taxes the brain. We can laugh at ourselves and our shortcomings and find something funny, humorous in everying. Even dying.
