Where in the Bible does it talk about inflation and uping the percentage of tithes? Jesus didn't belong to a church so how did they come up with giving to the church? Jesus said to give to the poor, not to Him. I just think the Romans were a bunch of controlling men who wanted power and prestige and everyone's money. Do you truly believe that God wants ALL people to give 15% of their earning? There is a ton of poverty in this world and I don't think God wants the people who are earning $10/week to feed their families to take what they have away from them to give to a church. What are your thoughts?

That's just business! Inflation and higher interest rates. Heck, they've gotta pay for their rolexes and crystal chapels somehow....the tax exempt status only gives them so much. Why would you be so stingy? God needs his preachers to be able to afford meth and homosexual hookers!

God asks that we (meaning all believers - doesn't matter which religion) give a tithe of our earnings. A tithe is 1/10 no more no less.
this money is used to fund the running of the church which includes the pastors salary, the support staff salary, the electric,/water/sewer bills, implementing church programs like ESL etc..... Some churches have a pastors fund where the pastor has access to monies that he can use to help a person with their electric bill or to buy food or medicine etc....
If you aren't sure where the money you give to your church goes then ask!!!! If you keep getting the brush off then something is fishy and I'd look for another church. There are churches who make you show you check stubs before they'll let you join their church and insist that you volunteer a certain number of hours a week/month to doing "the Lords work" (which is what THEY determine it is) etc.... those churches are, in my opinion, businesses.
OOPS!!! Getting on my soap box...... a tithe is 10%.

Tithe means tenth. Sure church expenses are up, but so are wages. When a carpenter was earning four dollars per hour, a tenth of that war fourty cents. Now the same carperner work calls for a wage of thirty bucks an hour. Now the tenth is three dollars.
The percentage doesn't have to go up with inflation in order for the church to take in more money.
Waitresses and waiters asked for a higher percentage a few years ago. The same applies as above.

Tithing comes from the Old Testament. Christ fulfilled the Mosaic Law of the Old Testament and gave us a New Covenant.

Now we give offerings, as opposed to tithing. Although some churches still suggest tithing, it's not required.

Mormons, on the other hand, demand tithes and their bishops keep track of who is paid up and who is behind in the tithing. If they don't stay paid up, they can't have a "temple recommend," meaning they can't get into the temple. But God isn't there anyway, so it's a moot point. ;-)

The Church is subject to the New Covenant promised at Jeremiah 31:31-34. As such, we are to follow the Law of Messiah, not the Law of Moses.

While the Mosaic law required two 10% tithes per year (one at each harvest), it also required an additional 10% tithe every three years. But again, the Church has NEVER been subject to these laws.

The tithe was God's way of getting His people used to giving to Him. Today, we understand that it's not really our money God wants (although money does sometimes help) -- He wants our time as we pray and help others. By doing so, He tells us we are giving to Him.

To tithe litterally means to give 10%. If your church says different, it's time to find a new church, anything over 10% is an offering and that is souly up to you.

Frankly Jesus paid our tithe when He shed His blood for us, but it is still a good thing to help keep your church funded. You do use it's resources after all. But it should never be required of you.

I also want to point out that it is been statistically proven by the IRS that the poor give more (in any charitable situation) than the rich.

15% is a standard restaurant tip. But the reason that God enstated tithes was so that the church could care for itself and help its poor constituants. The money is SUPPOSED to be used to care for the poor, widows, and orphans and for the spread of the Gospel. However, churches in recent times have used the money to build extravagant churches and use the money for unneccessary material things, rather than helping those in need.
Also, tithing is about giving what you can. Christianity is about being a servant. The poor who give, know that there are those worse off than they are. They are giving the money to help. They are truly embodying the Christian servanthood required of us.

I've never heard of anyone asking for 15%, but 10% is biblical.

Genesis 14:18, 20 And Melchizedek...was the priest of the most high God. ...And he [Abraham] gave him tithes of all.

note: "Tithe" simply means "a tenth".

Leviticus 27:30 All the tithe...is the Lords: it is holy unto the Lord.

Genesis 28:20, 22 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying,... of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

But didn't Jesus condemn the tithing plan?

Matthew 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Note: No, Jesus saw that the miserly Pharisees were counting out individual leaves and tiny seeds for tithe instead of taking it to the temple by the bushel. Therefore He rebuked them for being so exact in tithe while failing in judgement, mercy, and faith. He did not condemn them for titheing, but for ignoring the other great principles of Christianity. That is why Jesus said, "These ought ye to have done [speaking of tithing], and not leave the other undone."

Greenie,
Tithing was commanded of the Israelites (Jewish Nation). Christians are told to "give as they have been prospered on the first day of the week". We have an obligation to attend serviuces and support our local Body in its mission to spread GOD'S WORD. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks,
Eds

Where did you hear 15%?
All anyone has to do is study the doctrine of stewardship carefully. This tithing business is a nice place to start, but we are NOT ordered to give any set amount.
