According to the American Heritage Dictionary (4th Edition, 2006), a fable is defined as;

A usually short narrative making an edifying or cautionary point and often employing as characters animals that speak and act like humans.

According to the bible, both a donkey (Num 22:28) and a snake (Gen 3:1) are said to speak. Therefore, by definition, the bible is nothing but fable.

Why would you live your life based in what is, by definition, fable? We don't live our lives based on the Wizard of Oz, even though a lion is said to speak. We don't live our lives based on Bugs Bunny, even though a rabbit is said to speak.

What is the difference between the Wizard of Oz, Bugs Bunny and the bible, which would cause you to live your life based on fable, wherein animals are said to speak? Do you not know that snakes can't speak, since they lack vocal chords?

I fail to understand how any rational person could live their life based on something that is defined as fable.

The Bible is not a short narrative.

If you'd like to define the Bible as "nothing but fable," that's certainly your perrogative to do so. However, as a Christian, I don't consider the Bible to be a fable.

Why are you so vehement about putting Christians down? Don't you believe that everyone should be able to choose their own belief system? Can't Christianity be one of those belief systems? If you want to think that I'm irrational because I am a Christian, I suppose its ok. I make plenty of rational decisions on a daily basis, and I don't think its a fair characterization to call me irrational because I'm a Christian. Neither do I feel it is fair to call the Bible a fable because it contains a talking animal.

However, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. And I hope I've managed to answer your question from a Christian's perspective.

All religious and spiritual paths center around a set of stories or lessons, meant to guide and inspire. The truly spiritual person rises above the need for teaching materials, instead pursuing enlightenment (or godliness or holiness, if you will) through direct commune with the Higher Power. By that time, they are mostly condemned as heretics by whatever path they originally followed (although some are later sainted). Regardless, if the tales bring a person to a positive place in which he or she is acting for the good of others, with humility and grace, then those tales have value and should be treated and spoken of with respect. The question is not whether or not it's true, it's whether or not it changes the fiber of a person's being for the better. Some people learn to be a good person through the Bible, others through Sesame Street or Ancient Egyptian texts. Who are we to knock what works for them?

I don't know if you could make a strong arguement for the whole bible being a fable. Certainly those two stories you mentioned, but not the whole thing.

One person's religious belief will appear silly to anyone who doesn't share that belief. This doesn't matter if you are Jewish, Christian, Pagan, Athiest, Muslim, etc. I think the only way to truly understand why anyone does something associated with a religion is to follow that path yourself.

That being said, if you are trying to provoke an intelligent response to your questioning of someone's faith, attempt to word it so it doesn't sound like you're ridiculing it

Who said the donkey and the snake didn't speak. Can you show me proof that they didn't. I think the theory of evolution is more of a fable. That's why it's only a theory. It can't be proven, the Bible can.

When you humble yourself, open your eyes and seek the God of the Universe, then you will understand. All who seek will find. That's a promise.

I live my life based on the Word of God - that is Jesus. I follow the voice of the Holy Spirit who guides me in my everyday walk.

The Bible is God's instruction book, a book of lessons, a book of love letters, a book of hope. Some stories are literal, some are parables. But also, God is capable of doing whatever He thinks is necessary for the situation, so I don't feign to know always which is which.

Ok, dismissing most of this silliness go and research the serpent (not a *snake* as so many ignorant people automatically assume) and the Hebrew word for "serpent". I'll make it easy for you: the word for serpent in Hebrew is ha-nachash. Follow that through to 2 Corinthians at 11:14. Then come back and rethink your "question".

I dont remember it being fables. I remember it the truth. Things have been proved in the Bible that wouldnt make sence with evolution like that there are fossils and bones of ocean animals in the middle of our country (Nebraska, Kansas) This all proves Noahs flood.

You wrote - Has any Christian promoting this "with the aid of twist of destiny" nonsense ever cracked open a e book on evolutionary biology? You spoke back your guy or woman question. You wrote - Is there some Christian propaganda device distorting the theory of evolution? Yep, YEC Christians hear that all of the time from Christian components.

And I fail to figure out just how in the world an atheist doesn't get it......

We have ALL sinned....we have ALL fallen short of the glory of God.

The truth is still the truth whether you believe that or not.....and you will have to answer to Him someday soon
