It hurts, no matter how you look at it. But there are varying degrees of pain in getting a tattoo. My advice to you, is go in there expecting to scream and cry from the pain! That way, you're pleasantly surprised. I got a tattoo on my spine and it felt quite nice in the beginning, 10 minutes into it and the last 5 minutes were painful, but nothing I couldn't handle. JUST DO NOT expect it to be a walk in the park! I think I speak for the majority of tattooed people when I say that it doesn't ever hurt as much as you think it will!

If people want a tattoo that badly, then the pain is nothing. You've got to really want it.

Well there are allot of factors to this question.
1) the pain tolerance of the person receiving the tattoo.
2) the location of the tattoo
some areas are more sensitive, places closer to bone or where you have more nerve ending, an example would be the Tattooes on shoulders hurt very little, the one on my forearms hurt more compared to my shoulder tats, but the one in the center of my back (on my spine) hurt allot, compared to the others.
3) The skill of the tattoo artist
Some would say this isn't a factor but it is, the needle has to be set to the right dept to give you a clean and well defined tattoo, to deep it can be painful, too shallow and it will fade quicker (relative to other tats)

But in the end, about 5 to 10 mins in you become somewhat numb and the pain subsides, at least in my experience.

pain is relative and everybody will say something different. me and all of my friends disagree on the most and least painful place to get tattooed. i would say the least painful place that i have been tattooed is my shoulderblade BUT i have only been tattooed on my back (the whole thing) and my feet. i have no experience with arms and legs. my husband say that the chest is the most painful. others say lower back, some say arms.

nobody but you can know for sure what will hurt you the most or least but it is best NOT to get or not get a tattoo based on the pain factor because tattoos only hurt for the duration of the tattoo and maybe a few days of healing. the tattoo itself is there forever and that should have much more bearing on your decision in getting tattooed.

All tattoos hurt. Period. But some hurt more than others. It all depends on your pain threshold. What is painful to me, may not be so painful to others and vice versa. My first tattoo was on my arm and it wasn't that bad. Then I got one on my lower back and it absolutely killed. I had always heard that the ankle was painful, but I got mine done about a month ago, and it actually didn't hurt that much. Again, it all depends ono your tolerance for pain. If it is something that you really want, then the pain is worth it.

In my opinion, it hurts but the area does go numb after awhile so then it is sort of a stinging feeling. The one on the top of my foot, though, HURT BAD! And the pain didn't go away like my others did while I was getting the tat, it hurt the whole time. But the pain was tolerable and very much worth it. I agree with the general consensus that it doesn't hurt as bad as you think it will going in...but expect pain.

Pain is relative. Some people have higher pain thresholds. Generally a tattoo on a part of the body with some fat/muscle hurts less. Close to the bone hurts most. I have 2, my shoulder didn't hurt, it was like someone was scratching (like you would an itch) the same place over and over and occasionally it hit me in such a way that I wanted to roll my should (like when someone hits a knot when they massage your shoulders). My ankle stung to high heaven, it was awful.

The more flesh there is the less it will hurt. The closer to the bone the more it hurts. I've got 8 tattoo's.The ones that hurt the most were my feet and my wrist. Least painful were the ones on my upper back.

Well I just asked about getting a tattoo on the foot, and the general consensus was very very painful. I have one on my hip. I don't have much meat there, so it hurt like hell. My sis has her top of her back done, I mean huge, and she said it hurt for a bit, but your body goes into shock after so much pain.

So I'd say get it where you have the most 'meat'.

Wish that were so with childbirth!

alright girly... tattoos aren't the best feeling but once it's done, it's awesome.

To be completely honest, it feels like a thousand bee stings over top of a bad sunburn. The good thing is, once the tattoo artist starts, your in kind of a shock that it feels a little numb so it doesn't hurt so bad.

The best place to get it is ankles... it doesn't hurt at all... either that or arms.
