Latter Day Saints are Christians. They are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The differences between this church and other denominations is based on the premise that Priesthood authority which was lost to the world was restored by a modern day prophet.

Latter Day Saints are the same thing as Mormons. The major difference in belief (among many) are that mormons feel that jesus came to the american continent after his resurrection and that the native americans are decendants of a lost tribe of jews.

Matt J. and Isolde are right. Also, the main difference is that Traditional Christianity follows the Trinity and the L.D.S. don't. Calling us Mormons was started along time ago as the name of our faith is very long and was meant as an insult.

Latter-day Saint = Mormon

Mormons are Christians
But most Christians are not mormons.

1 WE believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

My son wrote a paper on this for school (public school, by the way) Mormons (LDS) have some kind of belief that if people are good enough, follow all the mormon rules and stuff, they will ascend into a higher kind of being, like a god, and become a god. Which is weird, because that's a plot line in the Stargate Sci-Fi TV show.

I have mormon cousins who continuously let us know that since we are not mormon, we will be going to hell. And people think us Baptists are bad.

And if you're a good mormon, you get to wear the magic underwear, which also helps you ascend to god hood.

Christian beliefs are strictly from the bible....Mormons or LDS based theirs part from the bible, but mostly from teachings left by Mormon about Jesus visiting them in the Americas after his death...which is why they are called the Latter Day Saints...because they believe that because Jesus was killed by his people and also his disciples therefore the foundation of the christian church was no longer valid...and this validity or authorization of being the church of God wasn't established until Joseph Smith came along....

I don't believe in their teachings...I think it's all a hoax of how it started with Joseph Smith and Mormon...basically their whole church and they are so secretive with what goes on in their temple....everyone that is baptized must go to one of those temples..like the one in Salt Lake city, Utah... every married couple do some type of ritual or something when they get married and only the people who are married in the temple can witness somethng...and I've tried to pry that out of my relatives who has seen it or gone thru it, but they will swear never to reveal it....makes you wonder what goes on in there...
as if they will die or something...try asking a LDS what goes on behind those curtains or room or something...I bet they will take that to their grave....

Oh yeah...ask any LDS member how many times their Book of Mormon has been reivised or how many times their beliefs have been changed....they used to didn't believe in hell quess what they used to believe their hell was a basement......they didn't celebrate Christmas too, because they said that wasn't the right date, but they do now... ask how many times someone questions the book of mormon and that that will be changed...but you ask me how many times the BIBLE has changed and I tell you NONE....thru every translation and every language...the Bible still means the same, because it's the spirit of God....one Bible for me and no other compares...

"Latter-Day Saint" (or "LDS" for short) is the official name of someone who is in the "Mormon" Church (people started calling us "Mormons" back in the 1800's because the associated us mainly with the Book of Mormon). The official name of the Church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints."

A few of the major differences between the LDS Church and other Christian denominations:

*Mormons believe that faith through works brings salvation (in accordance with such things as James ch. 2, Matthew ch. 25 and the Parable of the Good Samaritan in the Bible), while many Christian denominations believe faith only will save you.

*Christians believe in the Trinity (God, Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three facets of one entity), while Mormons believe in the Godhead (God, Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three seperate people who are one in purpose).

*Mormons believe that prophets and apostles (and, by extension, things like divine revelation) continue to be called to this day (in accordance with Amos 3:7, in the Old Testament), while Christians believe no prophets or apostles have been called since the first century AD.

*Mormons believe that the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price (the other books of canon scripture along with the King James Version of the Bible in the LDS Church) provide additional witnesses (in accordance with the Bibilcal laws of multiple witnesses) to the truth of the Bible, while Christians believe that only the Bible is needed.

*Mormons believe that they can become like unto God (John 10:34, KJV: "Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?"), while Christians do not believe that we can become as God.

*Mormons believe that priesthood holders and positions within the church (i.e. bishop) must be called by God and by the laying on of hands by those in authority to give such authority, while many Christian denominations say that priesthood is issued by doing such things as getting a divinity degree.

*Mormons believe in work for the dead (I Corinthians ch. 15), while Christians believe that once you're dead, no further ordinances may be performed by or for you.

*Mormons believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression, while Christians believe that we will be punished for Adam and Eve's partaking of the forbidden fruit (aka "original sin") unless we are baptised.

The Book of Mormon teaches the very same doctrines as the Bible... fundamental Christianity.

However... the LDS Utah Mormon church does not follow the Bible or Book of Mormon. They follow what they term as "Latter Day Prophets". The teachings of these prophets supercedes the teachings of the Bible or Book of Mormon... much like how the Pope supercedes the Bible to Catholics.

What do the LDS do that is not in agreement with the Bible and Book of Mormon?

1. Thier past practice of polygamy. The Book of Mormon describes the practice as a whoredom and abomination to God several times, no excuses, no exceptions.

2. Celestial Marriage, where those who are sealed (married) in their temples become as Gods and procreate souls eternally as a type of God ruling over their own planets. The Book of Mormon never mentions any of this and teaches there is only One God, just like the Bible. The Bible teaches the worthy will not be married in the afterlife and be as angels.

3. Baptism for the Dead, where a living person can be baptized in the name of a dead person making salvation available to the dead. However the Book of Mormon teaches that the innocent infants, children AND ignorant adults need no baptism and are saved by grace alone. The Book of Mormon also strongly teaches that only in this life you can repent, and if you know the truth and rebel against it you CANNOT repent in the afterlife and change your fate and baptizing for them would be utterly vain and a mockery to God's mercy (for the innocents) and justice (for the wicked).

4. The 1st President as the head of the church with Papal like powers. The Book of Mormon teaches Christ is the head of the church, with 12 Apostles as overseers, just like the Bible.

5. A Changing God, altering revelations. Both Bible and Book of Mormon teach an unchanging God and forbids altering God's word.

6. 3 Degrees of Glory, where there is no real hell but a high degree of heaven, a middle degree and a lower degree like earth today. Both Bible and Book of Mormon actually teach one heaven, one hell, no in betweens.

There are many other LDS Utah Mormon doctrines that are in disagreement with the Bible or Book of Mormon. It is common for apostates to not follow their own books.

Latter Day saints is like a doom cult light beer. Mormons are polygamists which mean they marry multiple wives, they also believe in being as "pure" as you can be, like wearing plain clothes, no drinking or smoking. It's kind of weird that they have super sexual behavior, yet almost every other vice is strictly taboo.
Christians are monogomists, only one spouse. Christians are taught a bit more hypocritical views though, for instance like love everyone but spurn those which are different than what the bible says you're supposed to be like. Christian baptisms are usually less dramamtic as well, mormons sometimes tend to bathe a person in a tub or pool as a baptism and christians just do a quick splash of water most of the time.

Apparantly The term "Mormon" has its origins from the Book of Mormon, which is believed by Latter Day Saints to be a collection of writings and teachings of the ancient prophets and followers of Jesus Christ who lived in the Americas from approximately 600 B.C. to A.D. 421. These people were originally a group of Hebrews that left Jerusalem prior to its destruction by the Babylonian Empire. This group built a ship and traveled to the Americas. Mormons believe that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated the Book of Mormon into English by divine inspiration from golden plates that he received from the angel Moroni. Mormons believe that the Book of Mormon is another scriptural witness of Jesus Christ that is comparable to the Bible, which they also believe to be the word of God.[1] The book gets its name from Mormon, the prophet who abridged the record during the 4th century.

HOWEVER!!!! The Bible tells us in Proverbs 30:6 "Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar."

The Bible that they "read" and use a reference tells them that their "Book or Mormon" is sin. I've been approached by Mormon missionaries many times and they always tell me that the Bible has been tampered with and that their book corrects it. Well I will take the Word of God over Joseph Smith's any day.
