it doesn't matter . . . if it is real, it is a cloth . . . if it is fake, it is a cloth . . . Look for the Son of God . . . not cloth

Pope Clement VII knew Geoffroy had it made to exhibit for faith-healing scams in 1355, and Clement forbid it to be called the shroud of Christ. John in the Bible says Jesus was buried with separate cloths on head and body and the latter was filled with spices, so the Shroud of Turin could not be his. Carbon-14 tests were done by 3 labs in different nations and dated this shroud to the 14th century. Canon Ulysse Chevalier investigated the shroud and found an artist who confessed to painting it. He said it violates virtues commended in the Bible, i.e. justice and truth. In 1998, the Bishop of Turin said the shroud is a fake. Some con men make money by writing books that say it is real, but the ones who matter have long known it is a fake.

The shroud is the subject of intense debate among some scientists, believers, historians, and writers regarding where, when, and how the shroud and its images were created. Some believe it is the cloth that covered Jesus of Nazareth when he was placed in his tomb and that his image was recorded on its fibers at or near the time of his proclaimed resurrection. Skeptics contend the shroud is a medieval hoax or forgery — or even a devotional work of artistic verisimilitude. Radiocarbon tests in 1988 by three independent teams of scientists yielded results showing that the shroud was created in the Middle Ages and not the first century A.D.

my opinion: its fake

In the early 1990s they developed a new method of radiocarbon dating that only needed a piece of lint. It dated to the 1,500s, a time when forgeries and relics were abundant.

It is fitting that the Shroud appeared at that time and there because the Church was capturing the Waldenses and placing them in the Turin dungeons. Protests from Europe intimidated the Roman Church to free the "heretics" and they were allowed to leave the prisons for a haven in Switzerland in dead winter.

Only God can tell how many people perished on the walk over the Alps, but God remembered the Swiss, and they were spared major invasions in the World Wars.

I saw a show on the History channel about it-it was compared to some face cloth that was supposed to be used on Christ, too, and they didn't match up. Eiher both are fakes or one or the other is. There's also a rumor that DaVinci created it b/c he figured out some photo-thing and used a cloth from that period. Testing done on the cloth dated it to DaVinci's time but the argument is that piece wasn't accurate b/c it had been burned in a fire.
Either way, it's still extremely old and an interesting piece of history... :-)

well first off you have to accept that carbon dating is not only accurate but factual. now before it was proved to be a fake the fundies took great pleasure in showing it off. after the testes they told the world that the tests were inconclusive and/or wrong and that the shroud was 'too fragile for further testing'...

The Shroud exists.....but who really knows if the likeness is of Christ....or if it's fake.

It's real, in that it has real blood, it is a real shroud.

Was it the shroud Christ was wrapped in? Could be.

As far as proving it wasn't Jesus' shroud, well that has not actually been proven. Carbon dating on the shroud showed it as being only a few hundred years old, but carbon dating is not accurate.

Carbon dating says it fake, but scientists also say the carbon dating may have been messed up by the fire, so it could go either way. It would be nice for believers to have physical proof, but we will never have physical proof because it would counteract faith. If we ever do get some real, tangibile, physical proof, it will be towards the very end, too late for those waiting for that proof.
