It is an XLT with 4.0 6 cyl - 4x4 manual transmission. Right now it only has a ball on the bumper - so probably would need to install a towing bar.

Just want to know the safest maximum towing weight - want to pull some kind of camper trailer. Thanks!

The towing capacity for the 4x4 with the manual transmission is ONLY 3200 lbs, not as high as previously stated, the automatic will tow 5600 but NOT the manual. Unless you enjoy replacing clutches.

Information from 1999 Ranger owner's manual.

don't know about a 1999 but my friends dad was a ford ranger with a tow bar and he tows his 19 foot boat no problem. the boat has a inboard outboard v8 motor and it is a closed bow so you will probably be OK

i had an old dodge D50 w/a 2.6 motor i used to pull my 23 ft sleeckcraft w/ it, it also had a bumper hitch, it was a tandem trailer which means you need a class III hitch it is a wonder i didn't leave my bumper on the ramp!! your trailer should have a tow rating on the neck to let you know which hitch you should use. you can get away towing w/ a bumper hitch, but if you have a mishap towing on your bumper, and your trailer required a larger hitch you will be responsible for all damages!!

Manuals always pull more then automatic, 5600 sounds right to me. Never heard of a 1/4 ton rated under 5000 pounds myself and 4X4's are normaly built a little heavyer if anything.
