Is there anything I can do to prevent or neutralize cigarette smoke from coming up my heating vents? There is a chain smoker living in an apt below me and our vents are linked and the smioke comes up and is unbearable. I have a really good air cleaner but that does nothing. I've also stuffed furbace filter material in the evnts which also does nothing to help. Any ideas???

Try a carbon filter in addition to the a HEPA filter in the vents. Carbon is better for removing cigarette smoke. They loose their effectiveness after a couple of months (may be sooner) and need to be changed regularly.

You may want to see if there is a local health agency that measures air quality and see if they can help. If they deem the air to be bad, then the landlord would have to get rid of the smoker (not you) or make modifications.

I don't have that problem, but maybe it would help to cut up an air filter for AC to the sizes of your vents and also get that Lysol spray that is supposed to eliminate the odors not a knock off, but the real stuff. Good Luck

Oh nasty, nasty ! I live with a chain smoker and I have found nothing that is really effective against the smell of the smoke,
Perhaps you can ask to be moved to another apartment unless your landlord can fix it.
This seems to be a problem for the landlord- he is the seller in this case and you are the consumer-It seems to me that he owes you some action here .

I saw on TV a pricey but supposedly really super ionizer that stands in column form about 3 feet tall...but it was several hundred dollars...supposed to completely eliminate smoke.

Other than that, moving to a non smoking complex is all I could suggest.

So sorry...I know how allergies can afflict

Lost - I hate to say it, but I do not think there is much you can do. You may want to close the vent where the heaviest of smoke is coming from.

Next step is to move. Even if you complain to your landlord, they will not move him, they will move you.
