certainly the basic equipment, your body, is genetic.
In some people, there is just the right combination that allows for well-formed space at the back of the mouth, tongue and throat that is indispensible for ultimate beauty of tone.
Musicianship, the ability to carry a tune or stay in tune altogether are more learned talents, and may have no relationship with genetic background.
As others have already posted, my parents were also not well trained in anything musical, although they enjoyed listening a great deal. My sisters and I picked up on their enthusiasm, at least, and were able to follow that road a little further. I sing professionally, my next sister sings for a hobby, the third can't sing well, but plays ( and now builds) violins and violas, the 4th plays violin, and the 5th, clarinet and bassoon. We were taught to listen to music, and I think that is a vital factor that is missing from most school curricula- teaching people how to listen, whether it's music, or a play, or a lecture. Most people have the attention span of a dead chicken, and don't bother to take the necessary time to listen and learn these skills.
Also, recent brain research has shown us that being "tone deaf" is far too overused a term.. Real congenital amusia (as it is clinically termed) is a rare condition that is classified under brain defects.
the rest have just not "tuned in " to listen.
And certainly, having a flair for music doesn't make it a prerequisite for your own job of choice. My daughters have the flair. they don't want to make music their careers- two are interested in linguistics, and the third in math and physics, although they will always enjoy music as a hobby.
so, the short answer is yes, and no.

I don't think its true that singing is in your genes. I have been having singing lessons since I was four years old, I am now 16 years of age and do a lot of stage performing carrying out main roles. This involves a lot of singing. None of my family have ever sung or done any form of acting and they all admit to not being able to sing very well either. I feel that most people would be able to sing if they had the training and worked at it. Maybe they would not be of the highest performance level, but they would be able to carry a tune quite well. xxxxx

Without a doubt it's from your genes.

My father's a musician. He sings, and I sing. I've also picked up on other musical talents such as guitar and piano. I can just naturally hear musical sequences and make sense out of them where other people can not. I'm convinced that some musical ability is passed genetically. I never received guitar or piano or vocal lessons when I was young, and I've taught myself all three things. There's no way it's nurture. It's nature.

I wouldn't say singing is in your genes. My mum and dad couldn't carry a tune between them if their lives depended on it. My mom is so tone deaf she borders on being classified as disabled and my dad is plain bad. Put them in a group with 50 other talented people and they'd still manage to make the song sound off key.

My parents have 4 of us altogether and we're all pretty good singers apart from 1 who seems to have my moms affliction so I wouldn't say its necessarily hereditary.

Singers like Celine Dion, she's born with such great capabilities its not something everyone can have.

Everyone can learns how to sing in tune and stuff like that, but you cant magically increase your range up to such a high level that Celine can hit.

I don't think everyone can sing falsetto like bee gees can either.

I think thats true. Look at people like the Osmonds & Jacksons...ok, so I'm old. I can carry a tune & so could my parents. Did chorus at school like them but no exceptional singers in my family.

Yes and no. Simply put, some people are naturally talented and others learn to sing.
