For what purpose? Hunting? Home defense?
Hunting small birds, rabbits, and such? get a 20 guage. It doesn't kick as much as a 12 guage. Hunting larger birds, such as geese, crane, get a 12 guage. It kicks more so make sure it has a good recoil pad.
Good brands? Most of them are good, I would stay away from cheaply made foreign guns though.
I like Mossberg, and Remington personally

There are only two semi-automatic shotguns I'd consider buying:

Browning A-5 (either a 12 gauge or a Sweet 16 if I could find it)

Benelli Black Eagle, or Montefeltro

i have a remington 870 super mag express and absolutely love it, but it is a pump. if you are looking for an automatic remington is still a good choice. it is a very reasonably priced gun. they also back their product which is important. my buddies that shoot autos love the bennelis and the berretas. you are gonna pay a little more for them though.

Chas. Daly makes a good line of shotguns, autos included. They are of good quality and great prices!

I have aways enjoyed my Remington 11-87 and my older 1100.

Beretta AL391. Put a good few shells through it on wood pigeon. Never let me down.

I own one, never sold it. Look it up on YouTube for a nice demonstration.

I've got the USAS full auto shotgun.... It may weigh a bit more than your usual riot guns.... But heck! It sure is nice in full auto mode.... ;-)
