Well it's obviously nonsense, isn't it? I think a lot of Christians are embarassed by these mediaeval ideas and try to distance themselves from them by saying that hell is actually just separation from god, rather than eternal torture in the fires of hell. It's just such an obviously man-made fiction, invented out of fear and ignorance and taken advantage of by religious leaders to control the population.

This question is being asked many times in this site. What one really need to do after having asked this question is to dig deeper on the truth. Is hell really forever? Does God really punish or forgive? What is religion not telling me about God? Where should I start my search to find the truthfulness of many religious claims?
Let me share with you what answer I found from your question which was mine not so long ago. In the world of spirituality, there's only love. No punishment nor hell. In this realm, there's only YOU, the conscious, the one playing different role at the same time. I can go on with the discourse but perhaps it would be pointless at this time because you may ot accept key words such as karma, rebirth and Christ hood. Please dig deeper on your own phase and you will find what you will seek.
Peace and Love.

God is the great fountain of Agapo love and he is not willing that any should perish but the wicked are made to get their due reward.
I dont believe people burn in hell forever. Anything that was created has no eternal life and does come to an end unless that thing be in Christ. Each one is punished according to his deeds for God is a just God.

Hell is the fear-tactic invented by religion to keep people in check. Some very cruel people, who have made life miserable for others, may deserve a lengthy period of punishment. We may even grant, for the sake of argument, that some deserve thousands of years of intense punishment. But can anyone literally merit unending punishment? It is natural to suppose that each sin a person commits merits some finite degree of punishment. To take an analogy from the legal sphere, we normally suppose that a burglar deserves a few years of imprisonment, and that it would be unjust to imprison him indefinitely. However, to put the point crudely, if each sin an unrepentant sinner commits adds a finite number of years in hell, the total number of years in hell will be finite.

God is not only going to punish you for 2000 years, but when He returns after Jesus resurrects the believers, God is going to destroy the devil, anyone in hell, and hell it's self. God is going to rid sin once and for all. You and everyone has a chance to believe and change your life for the better now, if you don't, then it's your own fault. But there is a punishment for not doing so, just as there is a punishment for breaking murder, rape, or breaking the law in general.

Sin is its own punishment. Those who've sinned against God have only themselves and Satan to blame. But sins can be forgiven by the saving Grace of Jesus Christ, who died to open the gates of Hell. Those who sincerely ask for God's forgiveness in this life will not die forever.

The God defined by Middle Eastern Hebrews is not love.
There is a God, but not the one described in the Old Testament. The one who they say still punishes us for something Adam and Eve did, , demanded animal sacrifices, and who had his own son killed.
True Love is displayed by average, every day parents here on earth.

You will spend eternity somewhere, that means forever. Like it or not, your own question says so much, "If God is ", its not "if" Does a teacher fail the student, or the student fail himself? God sends no one to hell, each makes that choice for theirself. Look, if you hate going to church on Sundays, music that glorifies God, if you cant stand the bible, if the thought of bowing down and giving thanks to the one who created you for just one day a week is too much for you? then you certainly would not want to do it for all eternity? Right? so you will join for all time, the one you spent your "lifetime" following. You made the choice, not God, don't order the Escargot, then complain to the cook that there is snails on your plate.

The better question is, Why would a person deny salvation from a loving God who made a way for a person to be saved? God is holy and because he's holy, he must rid of the things that are unholy in his sight.
Numbers 14:18
'The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;
A person who refuses God, refuses his free gift of salvation (emphasis on free) ,and payment for their sins by the blood of jesus. by doing that,a person chooses to die in their sin. And they pay for their own sins in hell.

This sounds like complaining
Do you know how God punishes complainers?
God will burn the complainer, and everyone residing anywhere near him, with fire.
“And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp” (Numbers 11:1).
