devide the gross amount by 1.(VAT percentage) to get the net sum - the difference is VAT

e.g. VAT percentage is 16%, total amount is 116,--
116/1.16= 100 = Net amount, VAT = 16,--

For the UK rate of VAT of 17.5 per cent, multiply the total amount (price plus VAT) by 0.1489 and it will give you just the VAT. For example, if you pay £1000 for an item subject to VAT, then the VAT is £148.90 and the pre-tax price is £851.10 by subtraction. Check it out. Price £851.10 VAT at 17.5 per cent is £148.90 to the nearest penny. OK?

This may be a bit long winded, but here goes-

Gross amount divided by 117.5 (that is 100% of the amount plus the standard UK VAT rate of 17.5%). Multiply the answer by 100. This gives you the Net amount.
Gross amount minus Net amount gives you VAT amount.

e.g. Taking the gross amount as £100

100 / 117.5 =0.851
0.85 x 100 = 85.10 (net amount)
100 - 85.10 = 14.90 (VAT amount)

Hope this helps.
