Once it was believed that a once a day feeding was okay for adult dogs. Now we know better. We have learned that most dogs are happier and less stressed if fed two or three times a day. To feed 2 meals per day, take the amount of food you were going to give the dog once a day, divide it in half, and there are your two meals. If you aren't sure how much to feed, you can read the feeding suggestions on the packaging. Remember that this is a guideline only, and that some dogs will need more or less than the suggested amount. So, if your dog is thin or loses too much weight, feed more. If the dog is overweight or begins to get fat, feed him less. For 3 meals a day, just divide the total amount you were going to give the dog in one meal by 3 and adjust it up or down as explained in the paragraph above. Many Toy breeds are fed three times a day because their metabolisms are so high. You may find that this works best for your 5 lb. dog. Toy breeds tend to get low blood sugar and need the extra (third) meal. I would recommend 3 meals a day for your dog.

Even though feeding once per day has become a "tradition" it actually isn't good for a dog/puppy to only be fed once per day. A dog/puppy should be fed twice daily..it's meal divided in half..half in the morning, 1/2 at night. It is much better for their digestion and their health.

Your eating habbits shouldnt reflect on your dog. Your dog is still small and needs to get his three meals aday. Dont starve the dog, and giving food in the morning do you think that would sustain him till tomorrow morning. Get realistic, feed the poor animal. Dont try and make the animal a model too.

Puppies should be fed twice a day - morning and evening. It's best to give them smaller amounts then one big on. They need the vitamins and protien to help them grow. I'd switch to twice a day - smaller meals and try to feed them around the same time each day. Dogs like routine.

Some dogs do eat only once a day, especially in the wild.
But I am not sure why you would choose that route. Unless you are thinking of using other foods for training purposes for other times.
Just be sure he always has enough water.
I have known dogs who lived in a single dog family who were free fed and did quite well. Provided that there is not another dog to compete with or cats he should be well capable of eating only what he needs.

We used to feed our dogs twice a day, once in the morning, and once at night... but then we had the problem where they would bark and whine in the morning... and not to go out and go potty, but to be fed.... (we would wake up, and put them out to potty, and all they would do is bark until we fed them)... so we started feeding ours just at night... and we asked the vet, and they said it was perfectly fine. Ours are lab/retriever mix's, and Will be 2 years in Nov, and are wonderful, healthy dogs. They are only fed at night. We feed them around 7pm, they would eat about half of it, then wed let them potty and play for a bit, then bring them back inside to finish eating... then potty one last time before bed. The food is taken away at night.

Normally, adult dogs eat once a day, in the afternoon. To the person who asked if you liked eating once a day, dogs are not humans. I personally think it is better to feed your dog twice a day, once at noon and second in the late afternoon.

Perfectly fine. Dogs in the wild don't eat that much anyways. Just make sure to keep him hydrated.
