It seems a good deal more sensible than the notion that everything just evolved by chance.

It seems like a ridiculous idea to me. The fact that there is no evidence to back it up as well makes even more terrible.
At least with evolution, there have been studies and evidence to back up some of these theories.
Intelligent design is simply an idea from a fairy tale book. You've got more chance of watching Quidditch on Sky Sports than having an intelligent designer!

It is not even wrong! It does not pass muster as a scientific theory, it is just old, silly creationism trying to sneak into the classroom.
What is scary is how many politicians and persons in responsible positions of authority are just too stupid to realise this.
I am an atheist, and so despise creationist tactics, but I know many Christians who are also appalled. It is essentially a 'god of the gaps' concept, god is pushed into tiny little gaps in existing scientific knowledge, which means, as an Anglican Bishop said 'With every new scientific break through, God is diminished rather than glorified'.
It is also an argument from personal incredulity, which is inherently bad logic; 'I can't figure out how the prion pump could have evolved, so therefore it will never be figured out by anyone, so god must have done it, QED'.!
I've just read 'alieninthehills' post - it is breath taking, but in many ways typical. I suggest this link, for starters!

It is Religion not daring to say its name.
It is in fact an anti-rationalist hypothesis that, were it to be successfully introduced in the science classrooms, would also open the door to ALL the creation myths of ALL the religions and sects.
It is "unintelligent design" on all accounts.
> what is your opinion on intelligent design?

An Intelligent Designer would have made a far better job of it to be honest, suggesting that random chance is the more likely explanation.

Could it not be that everything that has happened in terms of our evolution was set in motion by a creator? I find it far more plausible than just accepting that we're here because of a series of millions of accidents one after the other - the probabilities surrounding that theory are astronomical.
Also I think that we're having to change our opinions every day as new scientific evidence emerges - Darwin is coming pretty close to being rewritten as it is. Just yesterday they confirmed that homo erectus and homo sapiens lived side by side for 500,000 years when it's always been asserted that homo erectus evolved into homo sapiens.

A PR exercise.
An attempt to "rework" the bible myth to create (evolve???) Creationism to become a piece of philosophy that is supposed to be "THE (only)" alternative to Evolution - for the sole purpose to be taught in Schools.
Of course in the rush, those behind the movement forget that it then becomes an 'indigenous creation philosophy' & as such ALL other 'indigenous creation philosophies' need to be included as acceptible altetrnatives to both ID & evolution.

I'll say this, 5 times I have asked, begged, pleaded with the "convinced" evolutionest on Y/A to give me just ONE link that showed clear evidence to susport thier belief. none, not one. a whole hell of a lot of excuese but no eveidend. One person kindly sent me a link they thought would do it and this is by a very higly respected "scientist" look what he says, and keep in mind he's arguing FOR evolutions
"(In the world of science, this proof is not very important. Evolution has been established science for a century, meaning that workers in the field routinely use it to make predictions because it gives correct results. Even without a proof, the theory is conclusively established: there is no reasonable probability that any theory will ever be found which more correctly explains the data. The proof is offered mainly for the edification of those who claim that “evolution is just a theory --- it hasn’t been proven.” Now, it has been.")
Even without a proof..... Even without a proof, we are going to teach and believe it, cause I said so.
Now you be the judge

The idea doesn't seem that intelligent to me.
Edit: At least nothing I have heard yet seems that intelligent.
