This is exactly what I do and you should to. First the cheapest airfare is always on the airlines website, you just first have to find which airline is cheapest to fly; for example, if you are flying from New York-JFK to San Francisco Delta might pop up as the cheapest deal than you would go to Delta’s website and find that it is a few bucks cheaper.
Before I get into this always remember that traveling on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday is always going to be the cheapest deal because these are the least traveled days of the week. Sometimes Wednesday is as well. And if you book the earliest flight for the day sometimes you get specials. I flew from Atlanta to Chicago Midway one way for $29 bucks on a Tuesday morning. I did have to leave at 6:00a but it was worth it for this price.
So how do you find the cheapest flight?
1. Go to farecast.com and fill out the information. It will show you all airfare deals and it tells whether you should by the ticket at the price shown or to wait because the cheapest fare listed will drop. This is accomplished by the website using airline analysts to evaluate when an airline will drop their prices. And I can tell you they are always right
2. Go to orbtiz.com and do the same thing just to make sure the prices are not cheaper. Also go here so you can see how crowded an aircraft is. The more crowded an aircraft the higher the fare.
3. Finally when you have found the cheapest carrier go to their website to save even more money sometimes as much as $10 dollars
The truth is if you see a one way fare for $110-$140 bucks to wherever you are flying just buy it, because it is more than likely the best deal you will get. You hear websites such as Hotwire or Priceline giving out fares for cheaper than a hundred dollars and it is just not the case. Go to these websites and compare the price you found on another website and you will see there is no difference. Priceline is an interesting website. It can be stressful. Unlike other websites you know for a fact how much it is going to cost, yet with priceline you have to stay by the computer for a long period of time to try and bid for a good price which you more than likely will not get.
One last thing I prefer to fly on flagship carriers particularly Delta and Continental, but I can afford to take them. Low cost carriers such as Airtran, Jetblue, and Southwest a lot of the time do have better deals. Although interestingly because of the mess the airline industry is in flagship carriers are dropping their round trip prices to the same as low cost carriers. And if I have a choice to fly Delta or Southwest I am going to take Delta especially since they have some of the best customer service in the country and are starting to put TV screens on all seats for flights longer than 4 hours.
By the way Frontier is a great airline with great deals. Unless you are flying out of Denver you might have to make a stop
Hope this helps

Hi
I don't know if you're still looking or if there's anyone else looking for similar good deals, but I found a way of getting the cost down!
You gotta use this guy, Henry Rustkirk. It's looks like a load of bullshit, but quite frankly it's not.
I'm going traveling in September and I was looking for hours trying to get the cheapest possible price for my initial flight from London to Vietnam and the cheapest I found was for about £350. Then I came across this guy who's selling some 'insider secret guide' on how to get the price down and thought it's only £20 so what the heck! I bought it and it was pretty useful! He tells you a load of tips, which are pretty simple when you think about it, on how to get your flight costs down.
.
I'll be going Vietnam, Thailand, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and China, and I reckon I've saved about £400 on flight costs, and this guide on cost me £20. Well worth it!

Yes flights are cheaper on the occasion of any festival so you can wait till that and get some exciting offers on the prices of tickets as well. Otherwise you can do an advance booking as they cause less fare if your are booking the ticket at least before 60 days.

The best way to get a great price is to search as many sites as you can. This can be very time consuming so what I do is go to http://www.bombasticlife.com - go to the Travel Deals page and then use Kayak - it will search 200 sites for hotel, air and car deals. It's a great way to check so many sites all at one time.
