I used to fast one day a week and I think it's a very healthy and beneficial practice for most people. I'm embarrassed to admit that I quit the practice -- force of habit I suppose.
The theory behind fasting is that digestion uses a whole lot of energy. Fasting frees up energy for healing and cleansing and gives those hard working digestion organs a breather. I don't vouch for the theory, I just know that I feel great the day after a fast. My MD encourages the practice.
The bad news is that I usually get a headache late in the day of a fast. The good news is that I actually eat less for a few days after a fast and feel better. Your mileage may vary.

Apart from the spiritual benefits, fasting offers a wonderful detox/ cleanse for the body. I try to fast once a month, but in reality it usually works out about once every 2 or 3 months. I always feel energised & much 'lighter' after a fast, as if my body has had a good spring clean, which of course it has.
I dont really want to comment on why others dont fast. I think, as with all spiritual matters, it is my responsibility to keep a check on myself & respect others for the lifestyle they choose to live.

Sure. Fasting detoxifies and allows the body to rest from all the impurities of food intake, especially meats. Detoxification occurs faster when you go on a liquid diet, i.e. drinking 8 glasses of water a day only.
For your second question, I'd say that mainstream Christianity has moved so far left from obeisance to the true teachings of Yeshua/Jesus who had instilled that --in addition to following The Law-- we should serve God with FASTINGS and PRAYERS night and day. And Fasting was the first thing to go.

There are some benefits to short periods (1-2 days) of fasting (not eating).. Before having my gall bladder removed I used to fast occassionally (drinking only clear liquids) to allow my body to clear itself out..
Since my gall bladder was removed (I had a major car accident which caused a laceration of my liver causing major internal bleeding, my gall bladder was removed during the operation that repaired the damage.) I haven't been able to fast (even drinking only clear liquids) for more than about 12-14 hours without having major digestive tract issues including pain, vomiting etc....
Check with your Dr. before starting a fasting regiment if you have underlaying medical problems fasting can lead to discomfort and other digestive tract issues..
As all things don't over do it and remember to get enough water...

I agree with the above people who say that it is a cleansing, not only siritual cleansing but also physical cleansing. Not knowing much about the detox, which one contributer said, commenting would not be appropriate, however there would be a hightend renewal of the body's systems after such a cleansing!

We eat way too much and the body has no chance tp really rest. It pushes food through so fast that it is not all digested wasting it. Also fasting cleans out deadly toxins.
