As far as I understand it, the Holy Ghost exists to work as your conscience, making you consider any outcomes of an action you make.

Also there to guide you through life, help you make wise choices, and warn you of dangerous situation round the corner you may not be aware of!

My personal experiences:

A long time ago I was walking to my fathers house, which wasn't in the nicest of areas, and I saw a cigarette on the floor. completely unused, on it's own just lying there. I have never smoked but heard a voice inside my head telling me to pick it up, which I did, and held it in my hand. As I neared my fathers house, a man who looked dangerous, drugged up too, stopped me, and asked for a cigarette. I passed it to him and off he went. I'm sure there are people who will read this and mock me for my belief (each to their own), and feel this is no more than coincidence, but I think otherwise and I also dread to think what would have happened if I had ignored the voice.

This is not the only experience of my life, but I feel other experiences are much more personal to me and my family and will not divuldge them here.

I hope though that I have helped answer your question!

The Holy Ghost (Spirit) is who we know as the third part of the trinity (triune Godhead-- father, son, spirit) In the Old Testament God was the one guiding his people. In the New Testament God sent his Son, Jesus, to lead his people. When Jesus was killed for claiming to be the son of God, God sent his spirit (Holy Ghost) to come and live within each person that accepted God as their Lord and Savior. In essence the Spirit is the part of the trinity that is leading us on our journey with God. The Spirit is only here to help bring glory to God. The Spirit also fills us and keeps us from going back to our old ways of life.

Another name for the Holy Spirit is Paraclete which means "one who comes along side." It is the "comforter." In explaining the Spirit's place in the Trinity, I use water as an analogy. Water is everywhere, seen and unseen. It is in us and around us, so water is like God the Father. When you freeze water, it has a definite shape and form, and then goes back to the Father when it melts. This is like God the Son. When you heat water enough it makes steam. It is invisable but contains tremendous power like when it is used to drive a huge generator for electricity. It is dynamic and provides things of comfort like heat for our homes and buildings. Yet, when it expends it's power it goes back to the Father as well. This is God the Spirit. Like the Trinity, water has three states, yet is all one. The Holy Spirit is most often ignored, I think, because that kind of power is a little scary to us. But when you tap into it, baby fasten your seatbelt! Hope this helps. peace

He is "the Helper", the Paraclete, the third person of the most Holy Trinity.

It was the Holy Spirit who overshadowed Mary, the mother of our Lord so she conceived Jesus.

It was the Holy Spirit who filled the Apostles after Jesus' Ascension to heaven...giving them the ability to heal etc through Jesus.

Before I read Scripture and Meditate I always ask the Holy Spirit to help me understand, to give me the gift of wisdom to read Scripture properly.

And as the Creed says, "He has spoken through the prophets."

Joyful, there are no such things as coincidences. You were blessed that day. Deo Gratias!

Benedicite,
J

Lose the "ghost." That word has connotations in our culture that are not in line with scripture.

"Spirit" is a better translation for our purposes and doesn't have the "ghostly baggage" to deal with.

God is said to BE SPIRIT and HAVE a SPIRIT.
-- John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
-- John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth...

That Spirit is personified numerous times in scripture, as are human spirits.
-- Acts 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
-- Luke 4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
-- Luke 1:46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.

The Spirit helps communicate God's message to us and our wants and needs to God
-- John 16:7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:
-- Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Oh, he's useless...

He just runs around with a sheet over his head.
"Holy Ghoooooost! Holy Ghoooooooooooost!"

"Holy Ghost, this is not an episode of Scooby Doo..."
