It depends on the type of depression. If you are depressed from a specific life event, but have been relatively happy otherwise, I would say counseling might help.
Counseling will obviously help the other type of depresssion too, the prolonged, drawn-out type that sometimes strikes for no reason. Keeping busy also helps, as it gives you less time to retreat inside yourself. Mostly, though, I've found that you have to truly want to get better before you can. I know that sounds really ridiculous, but it's true. This isn't like a magic step that, once completed, will cure you by any means. But in my experience of being depressed for four years, I found that I did much better when I convinced myself that getting better was the thing I actually wanted.

Oh man.......that's like a seriously open ended question since there is no universal way that fits everyone. Someone could be depressed because their work is boring or stressful. Some could be depressed since they are in a bad relationship. It's easy to say take St. John's Wort or some drug you are prescribed. But that would not be a remedy since no one knows the cause of your depression. First step, see if you can find a therapist who can pinpoint where in life, something is wrong. Then go from there.

either a good comedy and orange juice. but probably look at those poor souls wandering the earth dying young, strung out on drugs, living under bridges, losing loved ones, poor health. take your pick the plight of you is far worse in someone else. look up and be content with who you are and what you have . not who you want to be and what you don,t have.

exercise
Exercizing releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.
Have you tried it?
Drugs really aren't the answer.
You need to tackle the problem.
Change the things that aren't right.
