I am a 26-year old male. Over the past couple years my muscles have become much more prone to aching and fatigue as a result of exertion. It also seems like joints hurt sometimes. It seems like the change started over one summer a couple years ago. I remember going on a hiking trip in the spring and doing some fairly respectable hiking and I didn't have serious problems, while later that fall I did another trip that was if anything easier, and I kept getting such nasty aching tired leg muscles that I'd spend the next day hobbling around the campground. Its been like that with hiking ever since. I also seem to be more prone to aching, fatigued muscles in jobs that I've had- I had to quit a grocery stocking job due to it. I've been getting the same amount of exercise as I did before (usually a brisk 2-3 mile walk daily). Generally, my upper body muscles tend to be a bit weaker than preferable but my legs have always been decently muscular.

Any idea what this could be?

Another possibility is that of fibromyalgia (yep, men can get it too although you don't hear about it happening to them that often) and also Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The only way to know for sure what is going on is to have this evaluated further by your doctor to see what they think is going on.

possibly bad diet but I would check with a qualified physician for any glandular disorder or a possible deficiency.
sometimes to much in the way of dairy products can produce such an effect like too much cheese increases the fumaric acid produced through muscular exertion .

Make sure your staying very well hydrated. De-hydrated muscles will cramp and get sore very easily. Other than that make sure you stretch very well especially before doing things like hiking. Also make sure your body is getting the right amount of nutrients from your daily diet and if not consider taking a supplement.

Muscular dystrophy?.. Or a vitamin deficiency/lack of protein.

It sounds like a vitamin defiency. I can't remember which one it is, but you are not getting enough of it probably. Get on a multi-vitamin.
