98 Dodge 3500, 2wd, 5 speed man., 24 valve diesel. 265k miles. I am having problems with it not starting after I shut it off. It just cranks and cranks, and it is like someone shut the fuel off. It started about 1 month ago. It used to start within 1/2 sec of cranking. Then it started taking up to 5 sec before firing up. Now, sometimes it starts, delayed, and others it does not start at all. The only way to start it is to use a little starting fluid in the air intake. I don't like doing this, but it is the only way. Once started, it runs perfect, idles great, plenty of power, no problems at all, until I shut it off. The fuel pump seems ok, it is not lagging the engine. Fuel is getting through the filter ok. Air filter is clean. Batteries are good. I do have a cracked exhaust manifold. The local Dodge people sucked, and did not know what it was. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

NEVER use starting fluid in any glow-plugged diesel. I am sure that you glow plugs are completely ruined now as you have burnt the heating eleements offof them and theywill need to be replaced. As for your starting problem, it could be a number of things. Have you replaced your fuel filter? I have been plugging up a whole lot more often with this new ULSD than i ever was before. Check the fuel lines/injector lines for an air leak, this allows the fuel system to loose prime and they take forever to start afterwards. And if none ofthis works, find a good CUMMINS dealer or a large Dodge dealer than sells many diesel pickups.

The< fuel shut off solenoid> is sticking it's behind the injection pump clean the shaft an spring.adj, so it pulls all the way open when you turn the key switch on. Or it will over heat an shut down $$$If the boot is bad than use a finger out of a rubber glove an 2 wire ties. That's a good fix as the dealer charges $275. to $450.

It sounds like either the injector pump or the lift pump isn't operating at full efficiency. Find another Dealer with more experience in diesels or take it to Cummins.

Good luck, with only 265K on it, you are just getting it broke in ;-)

It is losing the prime--the fuel is not getting up as it should--any vacuum line or fuel component can be causing it--go to a diesel repair shop--the dealer is not good at troubleshooting problems. I have tractors that do the same thing--the manual primer works good--a few pumps and away I go. You do have a leak or a vapor lock condition--get it fixed--NOW

fire is right, the exhaust crack is bleeding off your prime. but just so ya know, the cummins does not have glowplugs.it has a heater element in the intake which heats the engine more quickly than glowplugs can.plus it does it to a lower temp.

starting fluid is bad!. sounds like you have a fuel pump (lift pump i believe it is called, or an injector timing issue.) either way if you can get it to start again, take it to a professional.

Had the same issue with a blocked air filter if it back fires it can blow apart the air filter then ingesting the air filter causing turbo issue and plugging the intercooler. Also check for water in the fuel filter and change the filter.

Grizzy, a cummins does not use glow plugs. It uses a heating grid.
