One of the best things that you can do for your friend is find out what she wants. If she wants to be left alone, leave her alone. If she kinda wants to go out take her out. Watch some of her favorite movies...or plan a long weekend away from anything in her day-to day life. And if you still feel helpless...maybe your friend needs to go talk to a professional and figure out what it is the she is suddenly depressed about. Either way make sure she knows that you are there for her and you aren't going anywhere.

First off, nobody suddenly gets depressed. You said it yourself that "everything thats ever made her sad is piling up on her". I don't know what has been piling up on her, but if a person is sad, stressed, and feeling hopeless for an extended period of time it can take more than a 2am pep talk to raise your friends spirits.
Your friend should talk to a doctor and a counselor. It's hard to know what causes depression and only a doctor can diagnose it. Sometimes counseling and a good friend like yourself are not enough, there are medicines that can help too. If you think your friend has thought or is thinking about hurting herself in any way make sure she gets help immediatly! There is always a suicide hotline listed in the phone book or you can call 411.
While your friend gets through this, keep being a good friend and get familiar with the common symptoms of depression.
Common symptoms of depression:
Depressed or irritable mood most of the day—nearly every day
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities (such as hobbies, work, sex, or being with friends) most of the day—nearly every day
A sudden change in weight (weight loss without dieting, gaining more than 5% of body weight in 1 month), or a change in appetite
Inability to sleep or sleeping too much, nearly every day
Agitation or restlessness (observed by others) nearly every day
Constant fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
Frequent feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt nearly every day
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions nearly every day
Frequent thoughts of death or suicide (or a suicide attempt or plan)

Go to a 24 hour gym, or a late night jog. Exercise and meditation are the only natural treatments for depression I know of. A person should do at least 20 minutes of cardiovasular excersize three days a week.

I always journal when I have a sudden onset of strong emotions. Use crayons, markers, and write down anything she is feeling. Later when she is feeling better, she may be able to go back and make sense of it. She can even take it to her doctor if she is overly concerned.
Good luck and take care of you!
