Unfortunately I don't know of any cheap or free way to get rid of fleas. here are my suggestions, it's what works for me.
I have four kitties and a Rottie and live in the country where they go inside and out at will. Never see a flea, I use revolution every month and treat my yard, just the acre right around the house, not the whole thing. I have never had much success with home remedies for consistent flea prevention. Shampoos and powders kill the fleas on them at the time but don't repel more from jumping on. You should try frontline (over counter), or revolution (which usually requires a prescription), and be consistent, use it once a month.
The eggs fall off and then hatch in your carpets, rugs, bedding, and furniture. You need to go to your local pet store and ask for a spray that is safe for use around your cat and spray the entire house, especially where the cats hang out, or try a bomb. Also, putting moth balls in your vacuum cleaner bag or canister will help to kill any eggs, fleas, or larva that are sucked up. Otherwise, they will hatch in the vacuum and crawl out later. If the pet goes outside you should also treat your yard. I use sevin dust. Apply just before a rain shower, or use a hose or sprinkler to wet the lawn immediately after application.
If the infestation of the home is too bad you may see persistent fleas and need to treat more than once, or call a professional. I know it's a lot of work, but once you've got them bad it can be expensive to fix. Also, once your cats are flea free, if they scratch a lot, then They may need to see the vet. They can develop a topical, or skin infection from digging themselves.
Flea collars should not be used with any other type of topical treatment such as frontline or revolution. Plus, they just don't work well, and pose more health risks to the pet than to the fleas. Good luck to you

Front line from the vet, it does tickk, fleas & eggs all at once. use it every 28 to 30 days. You also have to get rid of them in your house. You are going ot have to bug bomb it. I tried them all as I raise persians & as you can imagine fleas on persians would be a nightmare. I Like a Dairy Barn spray I get at the farm supply store, (Dairy Bomb 55 is the exact name of it). This stuff is strong so be careful.
Plan your attack sort of say, put up dishes, all food, close all cabinets. Everything left out is going to have to be washed. Close all your outside windows EXCEPT one. Select one room you can seal off that has good outside window air coming in. Put your pets in this room, leave this window open, after you close the door seal it off with wide tape & even a towel if you have to, you DO NOT want your animals breathing or smelling this stuff at all. If you only have 2 cats, throw them in a carrier & take them with you. Start spraying at the back of the house. Spray each room lightly to mist only the fabrics, carpet, furniture. With this stuff you don't need much, if you start to smell it that is enough. If you can't get all done without breathing a minute or so. Go out get a fresh breath & start again till the whole house is done. Shut it up leave 2 hours. Come back in open a few windows, leave again half hour or so. Take your cats out & now do that room they were in & seal it up for a couple hours. Wash all counters & mop & vacuum. Anything moving will be dead. You are going to havbe to do this 2 or 3 times about a week apart to get rid of all the fleas. If you do this & continue to use front line they will stay gone. I did this one summer before we had frontline available & it was the only thing I could find that worked.

You need to get your cats on Frontline or Advantage for the fleas, as well as treat the environment they live in.
Flea baths are not particularly effective, and flea collars are a complete waste of money and can actually be health hazards.

the fleas are probably in your house. you need to get some flea spray for your carpets and anything else in the house that your cats lay on, like beds, couches, pillows.... you need to kill all the fleas, and then your cats will be ok. keep giving them flea baths.

one of the best natural products to use is garlic-i worked at a feed sore in the past-fleas hate the taste of garlic in the blood so i recommend that you get some (if you don't already have it) garlic powder and try putting it in their food.p.s this may be easier if you use canned food for your cats.
