You won't get an unbiased answer to your question. I have lived in both cities and love both of them. There are as many good reasons for choosing Sydney over Melbourne as there are for choosing Melbourne over Sydney. It comes down to personal preference. Sydney is the more beautiful of the two with the harbour, beaches and national parks encroaching on the city but it also has the vast Cumberland Plain of western suburbs. Melbourne is better organised than Sydney and it often gets the first run of new theatre. It is also the home of Australian football. melbourne has hot dry summers and cold wet winters; Sydney has warm wet summers and mild dry winters.
My personal preference is for Sydney but that's just me. If you are visiting Australia for the first time and are looking for somewhere to start your trip then Sydney is definitely the place to go. If, however, you are trying to pick which city to live and work in, pick the best job offer and take whichever city comes with it. You won't be disappointed either way.

I will be bias because i am from Melbourne.
Melbourne is a very cosmopolitan city.
We have fantastic resturants, cafes and shopping.
Having only visited Sydney once, i dont have a great comparision, however i'm a born & bred Melbourne-ite.
I suggest you try visiting both cities and see which one you could see yourself living in.
Good luck.

It depends on what you are looking for in each city. Syd is definately more eventful and dynamic. But Mel is lovely with its peacful touch
If you are a first time visitor, i would reco you to go to Syd first and try for about 3 days break in Mel. By the way, it just about 1 hour fly from Syd to Mel and you can get really good deal with virgin blue.
