I think you need to clarify your vocabulary; a sea tour can be 3-4 years long. A sea deployment is usually about 6 months but mine were about 8 months long (just lucky I guess). A shore tour is about 2 years long.
Now if you're asking about a deployment; The first six weeks back are usually given to leave for the crew. Deployments are hard on ships so PMS (preventive maintanence) is the order of the day for several weeks, this is followed by training (many people leave the ship and new people arrive during this period), and schools. Sometimes there is a shipyard period which can be months long or years long depending on the ship. After a shipyard, there is more training and requalifying. On the east coast this means a trip to Gitmo and a lot of work. This is followed by a complete load out of parts and supplies. Then comes the next deployment.

Sea duty means being assigned to a ship, whether she is in port or at sea. Shore duty means being assigned to a command on land.

Even when ships are not on the usual six month deployment, they will have many times underway.

The amount of time a Sailor spends on sea duty before going on shore duty depends on the rate. As a MM, I would have had to spend five years on board ships before doing two years of shore duty.

After the deployment, many Sailors go on leave, usually a nice two week vacation.

After sea duty, they get some time off and then start training for their next 6 months of sea duty, that is what they do on their shore duty.

umm, Tours of duty are anywhere from 3-5 YEARS, not six months. those are deployments. after a 30 day stand down, you turn right around and start getting ready for the next deployment.. and with the surges that are going on, you can expect that to happen sooner rather than later.

I guess it varies. My husband has had alternating times of sea and shore duty, each roughly about 3 years long.

We get a room at the Motel, a case of beer on ice, a bucket of fried chicken and we do what couldn't be done for 6 months at sea.
