Sweetie, sometimes people say mean things to other people just to make themselves feel better. It's sad really but it's just a reflection of poor self-esteem when you need to tear someone down to build yourself up all the time. Don't worry. You go for it - be brave. It won't be as bad as you think. The military has gone all soft and cuddly compared to the old days. The drill seargents aren't even allowed to yell alot anymore. In the old days, they could beat the sh*t out of you literally...and no one would say anything. The military can be a great choice for some people. Just get all you can out of it - learn a skill, get as many awards and promotions as you can, go in there with a goal, get your degree, etc.

I can't say why your aunt would say something so hateful, but ignore her as it was a very inappropriate statement. Good luck to you in the Marines and after and during the time you become a marine, I feel you will know what tough means.I think it is brave and tough of you to even go in the marines with the way the world is today. So, ignore your aunt and please take care and be safe!

Ignore her! My aunts and uncles and relatives think I'm the same person I was when I was 5. They say stupid stuff all the time. And if you are going into the marines, I'd say it was tough of you to even sign up!

Congratulations on joining the Marines. Marines have a reputation for toughness but more accurately they have determination, professionalism, and high skill level that is developed by going through their training. All of the U.S. Armed Forces have a high degree of these attributes and she will no doubt be proud of her nephew when you complete your training.
Thank you for your service and God bless you in your service.

Yesterday I told my aunt that I was in cheerleading. The first thing she told me was poor people shouldn't cheer. Killed me inside. I don't understand why aunts say these things, maybe because there jealous there kids aren't doing anything with there lives?

Maybe she feels like getting to you in some way would make you stay. Like saying your not tough. Relatives give weird reasons to make you do things, or to make you think you should do something else. She might feel like she doesn't know you well enough, and she is afraid of loosing you.

Maybe to stop you from going. Maybe she doesn't want you to go, or she's jealous of something. I don't know, past time with her friends who went to the Marines?
But don't let her get to you. You gotta ignore crap like that, you're gonna be a Marine.
=)
Good luck.

Sadly, sometimes people say completely innappropriate things sometimes. The good news is that it is comments like that which make us work harder and achieve more in the long run.
Don't give it another thought. People just say stupid things sometime.
