This happens so often.Obviously the mother was infested and you should have kept her flea free to start with. I think it is far too young to do anything for the kitten and I believe also at this stage when the youngster is suckling that you can't use Frontline or similar on the mother. As someone has said, the vet is the one you should go to, but please in future, keep your cat topped up with Frontline or similar. Even if you've never noticed the fleas before the kittens were born, she must have been terribly uncomfortable, scratching etc. and of course, with fleas comes worms! Get a flea comb in any case and start using that, but make sure that all the fleas that come off on the comb don't jump immediately back. What I find is if you keep a bowl of soapy water nearby and as soon as you see the flea dirt and fleas in the comb, dip it into the water because plain water doesn't kill them but soapy water will.

Dear Simba,
My cat Brandy has just had kittens a week ago. Her and the dog Max both had fleas but we didn't want to deflea Brandy while she was pregnant. Yesterday I found fleas on one of the kittens. My mum thinks this is really serious for new-born kittens. Is it? How can we get rid of the fleas so that we can give them away once they are ready? -
Dear
Your mother is right in her concerns. Fleas can cause young kittens to become anemic. This is a potentially fatal condition in kittens.
Try to get the little guys, the mother cat, the dog and their environment flea-free as soon as possible.
Use a flea comb to gently remove the dirt and fleas from the fur.
Ask your vet for a flea spray that is safe to use on just born kittens, if you do not find a safe spray use the flea comb (always read the warnings)
If you used a spray, then:
Place the kitten on a towel for ~20 minutes and discard the towel with the dead and dying fleas that have come off.
After using a spray, you can give the kitten a bath in gentle soap (make sure water is lukewarm).
Towel dry the kitten towel-dry it.
Keep an eye out for Ringworm and Mange. If you see a kitten scratching excessively or with bald spots, isolate him from his litter mates and consult a vet immediately for treatment. Also, do not forget to have momma cat spayed. Many local animal organizations have free spay & neuter programs for stray cats. Also, you can begin having kittyYour Pal, Simba

You can call the vet and get numbers for the animal rescue groups in your area. Most likely, someone will help you right over the phone. If you have a flea comb, you can comb out the fleas. If you have a fine tooth comb (for kid's head lice) use it. You can get a plastic head lice comb at the dollar store. Don't put any chemicals etc..on the kitten. Keep a glass of hot water near you so you can comb and then dip the fleas into the water, then flush the fleas down the toilet.

it is essential that you get rid of the fleas as other wise the fleas will drain the babies and they risk death.
however, kittens so young should not be bathed, as if you do, they will lose the scent of the mother and she will abandon or destroy the baby because it will be alien to her, cats go by scent not sight, so if you wash the baby it is almost a death sentance for her.
ring the vets and they will probably have you take the kitten down to them, so that they can give it an injection of mite-x or something similar that will kill the fleas once they have tried to feed from the kitten.
when you take her the vets make sure you take her wrapped up in something that smells of the mother, (part of her bedding / nesting) so that the females still accepts the baby back once the kitten is returned.
hope this helps :) and goodluck

Wash the baby off with a washcloth and try to get as many off that you can. Then towel dry the baby off. You may want to take a flea comb and go over the baby with that too. You're going to comb the baby everyday until it's safe to bath the kitten. The thing you have to worry about is the kitten getting flea anemia. Call your vet in the morning and see if there is anything else you can do. All the best ~^-_-^~

Yes, call the vet. In the mean time, you could give a bath with a citrus dish soap. This seems to "stun" the fleas so you can rinse them off. That's really all you can do for the babies. Just make sure they do not get too cold, and be careful. Treat mom with Advantage or frontline. The kittens can't be treated till 8 weeks. Just make sure you get those fleas off the babies, as they can easily become anemic from the blood loss that goes with flea bites.

ask the vet. You really should have sorted out the flea problem before the cat gave birth.
Get some flea stuff for the HOUSE from your vet. You need to spray all the places you cat goes..... carpets, rugs, chairs, stairs, beds, skirting boards, scratching posts, etc. The fleas will be hatching out in those areas.

Wash the little one with a mild dish soap. And use a comb to to help comb out the fleas. You MUST get the fleas off the baby or it could die from anemia. Those fleas will suck the blood right out of them and it will happen fast. You will need to rewash mom and the blanket. If you can't get rid of them call you Vet. Good Luck
