As usual mdigitale has no clue. Ubuntu with its default desktop environment (Gnome), would be too "heavy" for use with an older PC of those specs. You'd be much better off using Xubuntu instead. It uses the much more lightweight Xfce desktop environment in place of Gnome. Get it here:

You might wanna grab a LiveCD of the distro of your choosing. For new users, I'd prefer Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or SimplyMEPIS. PCLinuxOS can work too. The ones I listed are the most user-friendly and come with a LiveCD. A LiveCD is a way for you to test out the OS on your computer without touching your HD. I'd stick with the Debian based distros if I were you however, because there are more packages within the repositories, and .deb is easier to work with than .rpm. For your computer however, I'd go with a lighter window manager, such as XFCE. That is kind of a minimalistic version of Gnome made for older computers. People are very friendly and helpful on the forums of the respective distro. Remember, Linux is about choice, and freedom (As in Free Beer and/or Free Speech).
Welcome to the Nirvana that is called Linux.

If you get linux on the computer make sure you get a minimal distro with XFCE, Fluxbox, Ion3 or wmii desktop so that you can save system resources. KDE or GNOME would run too slow on this. I would suggest Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu, DSL, Puppy, CRUX or even Gentoo.

run the latest version of Linux. That way you run the least amount of risk of running into a problem with compatibility, Linux's only flaw.

I have to agree with redsoxer on this one, that legacy system will not run ubuntu, you'd be better off with something like Vector or Arch.
