My pomeranian weighs 5-6 lbs. and is four years old. She has never been bred before and this would be her only breeding. The male we would like to breed her with is a cockapoo around 5 years old and weighs approximately 18 lbs. Does anyone know is this would be safe for her? I'm worried the puppies may be too large.

Absolutely not. The male should always be smaller than the female or the puppies are likely to be too big for her to deliver. At best, she would end up having a c-section. There is also the possibility of death for her and the puppies. Please don't even consider it.

No it is not safe to breed a female to a male that large. Even in the best of circumstances the female can be injured or even killed, so why would you try something so risky?
Also, why are you considering breeding a mutt to a purebred. If you are considering breeding, at least breed to another Pomeranian and make sure that you have thoroughly educated yourself on all the dangers of breeding.

Please neuter your female, you really know nothing about breeding, you really don't no anything at all. (And I'm not saying this to be a jerk) Take the reason why you want to breed her into consideration, if your not doing it to better the Pomeranian breed, then you aren't doing it for the right reason. (Obviously your not, you want to breed her to a mutt...)

If you want to breed her for money, then get a job. If you want to breed her because you want another cute puppy around the house, go to your local shelter.

Seriously, to many dogs die everyday in shelters for you to breed your dog. It's because of people who breed there dogs and say, "this would be her only breeding" that there is an overpopulation crisis. The numbers add up. (Okay, it doesn't count for the whole overpopulation crisis, but I think you get what I'm saying here)

You really need to rethink this idea. The only breeding that should be done is for the betterment of the pure bred. ALso, the male should be smaller. You may just kill her this way. Please spay your girl! God knows that there are too many pups and older dogs out there that still need homes, and by breeding, you are killing these dogs, because people think puppies are cute and then as they grow into their adolescent years (which all depends on the breed, some can be around 6 months and last years) people give them up to shelters and rescues that are already overburdened. PLEASE, rethink this idea, as it is not wise. Also, it is not safe.

Absolutely not, it will kill your female.
If you have no idea how to breed dogs, you should not attempt it because there are many things that can go wrong and it could end up costing you lots of money and more importantly you could lose your dog. She is your pet so do her a favor and get her spayed. Don't make her into a living ATM.

To Ashley, Dogs are not goldfish and it does not work that way, try reading a book on biology or dog breeding before giving ridiculous and very incorrect advice.

NO NO NO If you love your pets at all you will not do that.. it could kill your female trying to have those pups. If it was an accident you should take you female to vet and get pups aborted and her fixed. If you ever want to breed small dogs, always make sure the male is the smaller one of the two so the pups will not be to big for the female to deliver..

I would not risk it, especially since the male is two to three times her weight.
Why would you want to breed a Cockapoo to a Pomeranian anyways? Breeding should be kept to better the breed, not ''create'' new ones.
Please, just don't breed them, because it's not worth the risk of her life.

P.S. ''Ashley'' mentioned a German Shepherd/Dachshund mix, and what she doesn't realize, is the German Shepherd was most likely the female, and NOT the male, because puppies do not ''stop growing'' like goldfish in a tank.

no - he is too big and the birth may cause damage.

Why breed more crossbred dogs anyway? You would just have to think of an even sillier name than a cockapoo.

What does your vet think?

When you brought her in for genitic testing to make sure she was not going to pass on any problems to her puppies, did you ask your vet what he thought of this match? If not, you probably should. Your vet would have the best answer to this.

Also...why may I ask are you breeding mutts? If you are breeding her I assume she is a champion, so it makes me wonder why you would want to produce such low quality animals instead of maintaining your line? If she has not yet been titled...again, why are you breeding her?

The puppies would be to big for her. It would be very unsafe. The male should always be smaller then the female. Your female could end up with a c-section or your dog's uterus could rupture.
