I have played for 18 yrs. now and am trying to make a living at it. Like any instrument it is very difficult and no matter how good you get you always work on getting better. I would recommend that you find a good teacher. You will go much farther and excel much faster. Do you still plan on keeping up with your flute and picc? You need to find time to practice everyday (at least a half hour for beginners) which can be difficult when you play multiple instruments and have school work. I know it's a bummer you have to wait but your mom sounds like a smart lady.
I still love playing. I practice anywhere from 3-5 hrs. a day. (I really should practice more) Even though there are times when I wish I would quit or I don't feel like practicing I can't imagine doing anything else.

i played violin for 4 years but now i quit coz hs is starting and well yea. anyways. I liked it. I hated my teacher though. You just have to practice a lot if you really want to be good. When your not "getting" something like if something is hard to play then you just have to "not give up" and keep on trying to get it right. It's not hard. I don't think it's hard. If I could do it then you can too. lol.
Oh and may i suggest an ELECTRIC violin? It's freakin awsome! lol It's like electric guitar except it's a violin.

Been playing for years.Started when I was 9, gave it up after 2 years (abd grade 1) to play guitar (I grew up in the sixties!). Went back to it about 30 years ago, only now I play folk fiddle - mainly Irish Jigs Reels and Hornpipes. Been using it in sachool for Country Dancing, in a Barn Dance band and down the pub in sessions. Wonderful. Go for it, whether you choose classical or folk.

I played violin for 9 years and it was the most fun. It's not hard to pick up, especially since you already read music. I hope you try it and that you like it as much as I did!!

it's probably one of my most favorite instruments ever. Learn it! You won't regret it, trust me! The first few weeks are really challenging but once you get past it every thing is fun!
