1. Pull out the shelving in the refrigerator to look for drippage and spillage on the walls and back of the fridge. While you're at it, wash down the shelf.
2. Open the freezer and dump out any ice you have. Ice seems to absorb funky odors.
3. As people have mentioned, place an open box of baking soda. That should take care of it... Also, I think by opening the door on the fridge and freezer allows the stinky trapped air to all escape.

Alot better than baking soda - here's an inexpensive and fragrance free solution that is perfect.. - I know many other people that use it just for this problem too. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates odors for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Just place a couple of these in fridge and freezer. No spills or chemicals or powder to worry about. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and Internet at customerservice@innofresh.com.
Definitely worth trying

You are going to laugh but this really works. Juicy Fruit chewing gum! Honestly. Just go get a couple packages of good old-fashioned Juicy Fruit gum, unwrap the sticks of gum and lay them around the inside of your fridge. Leave them there for a few days and the smell will be gone, the gum absorbs the odor or something!
I have used this to get rid of the raw chicken smell in my fridge, and a spoiled milk smell in the carpet of my car after a spill.
Good luck, that smell is wretched.

Take everything out of the fridge, wash the inside with a clean sponge and washing liquid, clean off the foam with a wet clen cloth and then leave a few wedges of lemon in every shelfs of the fridge and put your stuff back in. Also dont leave any food uncovered in the fridge.

Deodorizing Fridges and Freezers
Fresh is best! To help keep foods tasting like they should, replace your ARM & HAMMER Fridge-n-Freezer® Odor Absorber every 3 months. The unique flo-thru vents expose twice the amount of baking soda that absorbs the odors that can make other foods (even ice cubes!) taste funky. And while you’re at it, change your Whirlpool® water filter too!

I particularly have offered a smellkiller off QVC(made by Zilo). it incredibly is a around disk of steel and as long because it incredibly is in touch with the two air and water there will be no smells around for miles (properly, according to probability it particularly is somewhat an exageration). heavily in spite of the shown fact that, its super to circulate away interior the bathing room or out on the kitchen unit to banish all smells!

Put 4 separate cups of ground coffee in the fridge, it's just as good if not better than baking soda.

Try putting an open box of baking soda in there. It should absorb any remaining odors after a few days.
