The bible is twice as violent as anything you will see on cable TV. There's rape, genocide, baby killing....

Why are these stories being taught to children like they're a good thing?

Towlieban barbie: are you saying all the babies that were killed were wicked and deserved to die?
for example: Noahs Ark- God decided to wipe out the entire human race. INCLUDING BABIES. Are you saying those babies were wicked and deserved to die?

I'll give you another example. God decided to punish the Egyptians by killing the firstborn in every family. How fair is that to kill children for their parents mistakes? Did those kids deserve to die too?

Instead of The Velveteen Rabbit and Good Night Moon, my mother read from The Children's Bible, about Daniel in the Lions' Den and David and Goliath. I had nightmares as a child, and it was not until I became a teacher of young children did I realize the power of those images before bedtime on a child's mind.
While I would not categorize all Christians as doing anything, I do agree that the stories of the OT are quite graphic and maybe should be rated PG-13.

First off Christians rarely read the Old Testament anyways, they really only read the new testament. Second There is more than just the old testament(Tanakh), there is also the Gemera which explains a lot of things in the Torah(First 5 books of of the old testament and the Oral Torah) and it says that G-d ordered Noah to warn everyone that the flood would be coming and that they had over a 100 years to listen but didn't.

As for the Egyptians same thing, Moses warned the Pharaoh and he did not listen, also a large number of Egyptians went with the Israelites out of Egypt and converted to Judaism with them. All rapists in the Old Testament were punished

First of all, no church I've ever known or been a part of teaches these stories to children like they are a good thing, and most don't teach these stories to young children anyway. Secondly, many Christians, or Jews either for that matter, don't read every word of the Bible as if it we are to read and apply every story, verse, or incident as if it were a good thing, or as if God is saying "do this." I see the Bible as a sort of family history, with all the good, bad, and ugly. It's a collection of wisdom from our ancestors in the faith. It's a human account.

Children don't read the Old Testament...they are given a Bible Story Book,,,that puts these stories in a form that children can understand..the same way,,,hopefully...you won't let your kids read playboy magazine until they are older and can understand what sex is all about...

These stories are a good thing....they teach children the history, both good and bad of the Jewish people. They are taught how it was impossible for the people to live by the law and how they needed a Savior to learn how to live a righteous life....it's all good.

I used to feel the same way but the truth of the matter is, in the OT, God was protecting his chosen people in a world full of sin and satanic influence. God himself destroyed the wicked and has said he will do so again.

Now when God's chosen people rejected their promised saviour, Jesus, God turned away from his chosen people and opened the way to salvation to all of mankind.

Now God's people are from all races and countries so violence of any sort is not tolerated by any true Christians. Jesus himself set the example.

When you study the Bible and understand the theme, it does make sense.

because they are a good thing.
The stories in the bible are different than the ones in the media because the bible is teaching a lesson.
The bible shows the whole story behind the violence. it shows the good and the bad, where the media shows only what it's allowed to show for ratings

but since this is a question of spirituality and religion, it's entirely based on person interpretations and beliefs. you'll get many different answers

Christians don't actually read the Old Testament.
They just read a few New Testament passages and then brag about being bible scholars.

The Bible is a book of fiction that glorifies violence, rape, torture, degradation of women, slavery, child abuse and child murder, beatings, incest, war and genocide. People give this handbook on evil to children and tell them to do as it says. Can't these people read!!!

If you would stop hating God so much and undrstand the pagan culture of that time you would realize these pagans that were at war with Israel sacrificed their babies in fire to false gods.
This had to be dealt with. This is one of the many terrible reasons why there was so much war in the O.T.
