A DVD movie is recorded at about 6 Mbits/s, so 90 minutes are about 4 Gbytes. (+audio)

Assuming you use MPEG-4 or Divx for your AVI file you will need to go down in compression at about 1.0 Mbits/s.

If you reduce your picture resolution from 720x480 to 360x240 it is actually quite doable and you will get pretty decent movie quality.
