They follow their own conscious and live by some version of the golden rule. I don't know for a fact that atheists "sin" less. I do not when they are caught "sinning", it is not as widely publicized as when someone from the Moral Majority does. The reason is simple- most atheists don't set themselves up by acting as the moral authority for all when they are living the lives of hypocrites.

Its impossible to find who sins more or less on whole as a group. As an Atheist/Agnostic I look to the people I care about in my life for guidance, as I'd assume people of all religions do. One does not need to follow a deity in order to have good values. One does not need the fear of God instilled in them to have morals.

Conscience and Common Sense.

Atheist tried not to commit crimes because the two above mentioned items are used more often then the "Moral Majority" who follows what is normally known as "controlling" authority.

From other people, ususally.

Why do they sin less? Likely from living by the law, and not under some religious guidelines that make the simplest things a sin.

First question: no clue.
Second question: Atheists are generally more intelligent since they know how to think outside of the religion that they're parents believed in. So naturally, they know what is good and what is bad.

Internally. The golden rule. The desire for peace on Earth, not heaven (wherever that is). We don't think we know it all already.
