So I'm gonna get my BA soon, and well, I'm not ready to settle down and start a career, and am thinking of joining the US Coast Guard. I imagine id be an officer.... Anyone got any comments, Complaints, or words of wisdom?

The are underfunded/undermanned for all the jobs they have to do. But the Coast Guard does a lot of different things - protection of our shores and ports (and ports in war zones), search and rescue, boater safety, merchant marine/maritime licensing, environmental clean up, law enforcement (drug interdiction), and the list goes on. All the Coast Guard Officers I know (through work and Naval War College) are really great and really like it. They spend most of their career near the beach, don't get deployed overseas as much as other services and get to do a lot of great things that help people directly. Like any Service, you will make some sacrifices and will need to follow the rules if you want to stay in/move up, but at least you know the rules up front. Good luck!

I work for the US Coast Guard. Despite the fact that they used to be under the Department of Transportation and are currently under the Department of Homeland Security, don't let that fool you! The Coast Guard IS very much like the US Navy! They are basically a military organization assigned in peace time to protect (AKA Guard) our Coasts.

Compared to Iraq or Afghanistan it's easy duty. Most dangerous assisgnments would involve drug trafficking interdiction.
