purple or yellow?

How about a light yellow background and a deep purple design? Like a purple dragon.

Depends what you're decorating and what feeling you are going for. Purple is a vibrant, active color, but in softer shades can be calming and meditative (Lilac and Lavender are nice shades). Yellow too is active, but, again, in softer shades may spell bright calmness, like a soft cannery yellow or creamish yellow. Yellow seems more refined and purple seems more mod. Of course, they fit well together. How about a purple and yellow striped couch!?!? :)
Personally, I'd go with a soft yellow.

It's really a matter of personal preference. Also, is this a room you're talking about, or cabinet, or what? Just remember, yellow reflects light much better. Purple makes a room look darker.

Are you painting something? Both are great colors and come in several great hues. It depends on what effect you are going for. Bright yellow is very energetic. A more subdued yellow is calming. Purple to me is more calming in general.

Both together! yellow and purple are complimentary colors, so they look fabulous together! But, if I must choose, Purple.

purple.....yellow is too bright, it reminds me of having to wake up in the morning and I'm not a morning person
