I'm not a hardcore photographer; I'm just a kid who wants to take pictures with friends and during vacations and stuff.

What brand would you recommend?
How many mega-pixels would be sufficient?
Price range: $150 and lower

Hey there mate! I'd love to help u out! I always go for camera brands such as Canon or Nikon. At least their lenses r better. It's generally been said that the lenses are the ones that takes better pics. But that's not mainly the case anymore, but also the camera body! I used to have a Sony CyberShot, but don't find them as good as the "recognised film-camera" brands. I don't know how much the Nikon S10 or an S4 will set u back in the US, but I use a Nikon S10 and it does wonders for me. Go for an IXUS(very light and extremely compact which u can shove in your pocket) if it's not over $150, with at least a Digic2 processor and 3.2Megapixel. Mind u a 5 Mega-Pixel one would do wonders for u, if u want to crop and edit(and is much easier than using the software [driver] that's supplied with the camera)! I always use a memory card reader, just to save the hassel. The software-driver is good for if u want to show the date on the photo!

megapixel:
One million pixels. Refers to the resolution of a digital imaging device (monitor, scanner, video camera, still camera, etc.). For example, a five-megapixel digital still camera might take a picture composed of 5,038,848 red-green-blue color dots (pixels). The image would have a 2592x1944 resolution: 2,592 pixels across, 1,944 pixels down.

Although its sometimes good to have a lot of megapixels, all you really need is like 6-8 megapixels. If you go too high, and you want to print a picture, some printers cant print so many dots in one place, therefore reducing the quality of the picture.

Here is the perfect camera for almost anyone. Its has a perfect balance of everything to provide you with VERY good pictures:

You should get the PENTAX Optio W30. It has TONS of features, VERY good picture quality, its sleek & stylish. And to add to all that, its waterproof! You can see the camera here: http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/product_details/digital_camera--Optio_W30/reqID--9587364/subsection--optio
I have had the PENTAX Optio W10 (a slighty older version) for a few years now and I absolutely LOVE it!

Go try it out at your nearest Ritz Camera!

In that price range, Fuji and Canon are great. Anything 6mp or higher will be fine- I actually have a 3MP camera that I've had for years which takes great photos. The most important thing is make sure your camera has a good optical zoom (not digital zoom, which degrades image quality quite badly) You might check around for discontinued models- you might find a real deal that way.

For more expensive SLR cameras, the top brands are Nikon and Canon.

All of the above are pretty good choices, another Camera you might want to consider is the Sony S-650, 7 megapixel, right at $150 (or lower) and it has a top quality lens

ok i am including a link on cameras that cost under $200. 5 mega pixels should be plenty enough for what you want to do...don't go below 5 i say.
for $150 you can easily pickup a 6 or 7 mega pixel digital camera...try the panasonic because they do have some face-recognition and stabilization around that price.

the best brand would have been Canon.. But if ur budget is only $150, i would recommend fujifilm or panasonic, for $150, u probably will get urself a 5MPX or lucky, 6.

Japanese brands are better in camera than others
