Christians like to brush off the horrible things found in the OT by saying that Christians live by the NT. Well put that aside and solely focus on what kind of God you're worshipping! The God of the OT and the NT is still the same God! In the OT God murdered, approved slavery, was a sexist, and etc...how do you justify those horrible things God did back then? To kill a first born child who God Himself put in a woman's womb is purely sadistic! Innocent children were murdered by your loving God! Women were oppressed; they had to be silent in church! Were women more sinful than men? God approved of masters beating their slaves!

The point is, I don't care if you live by the old or new testament! The fact is that your God is a sadistic, unethical, cruel, and ruthless God! If you think differently, please elaborate. And to mass murder nations, which also include innocent children is absolutely xxx. After all, God were so biased He only communicated with His chosen people and then destroyed other nations when He didn’t even care to teach them anything? When God is angry He destroys everything that stands in His way, including innocent animals and children who had no clue! I really would like to know what kind of context would make those evil verses right. Oh, I’ve added some of the verses with added comments as reference for those of you who aren’t convinced.

(What kind of biased God do we have here…hm?)
However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your PROPERTY, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

(What does the Bible say about beating slaves? It says you can beat both male and female slaves with a rod so hard that as long as they don't die right away you are cleared of any wrong doing.)

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

(You would think that Jesus and the New Testament would have a different view of slavery, but slavery is still approved of in the New Testament, as the following passages show.)

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

(God will kill everyone! Including innocent animals, not even birds will manage to get away!)
"I will sweep away everything in all your land," says the LORD. "I will sweep away both people and animals alike. Even the birds of the air and the fish in the sea will die. I will reduce the wicked to heaps of rubble, along with the rest of humanity," says the LORD. "I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship. I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests, so that even the memory of them will disappear. For they go up to their roofs and bow to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the LORD, but then they worship Molech, too. So now I will destroy them! And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the LORD's guidance or seek my blessings." (Zephaniah 1:2-6 NLT)

There is not one Christian opinion on this. The thing that you have to keep in mind is that there are many Christians with many different opinions. I can only speak for myself.

I'm not going to stand here and tell you that I follow everything in the Bible. I'm not going to be like those who claim to take the Bible literally and say it's inerrant and infallible, yet do not follow all the rules or examples within it (while claiming they do). The consensus of our society is that slavery is wrong. And I believe it is wrong. Whether the people who wrote down the Bible got it wrong or not or allowed their own beliefs to color their writing, I cannot answer. But I'm not going to sit here and say I condone slavery when I do not, nor do I believe God would condone it.

There are things in the Bible which seem cruel and with which I do not agree. But my faith does not solely rest on the Bible. If you took the Bible away, I would still have Christ. So, I'm not going to try to justify or explain all of the things you mention.

My faith is based on my relationship with God--pure and simple. He has shown me great love and blessings so I view Him as loving. I think the description of Him in the NT is much more accurate and I base that on my own experiences with Him in my life.

At what point in the NT, people ask Christ about divorce and give him a command from Moses as proof. Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." (Matthew 19:8-9) Clearly, God allowed these divorces to take place through the direction of Moses even though it was not inline with God's will. Perhaps slavery is another issue like this?

None of us have all the answers (although some will claim they do) and faith does not require all the answers.

You don't get a clue on the CONTEXT of the OT.

And, in the NT God is not justifying the slavery, just that the purpose of Christians was to submit to the government, i.e., the Roman Empire (by the way, they were PAGAN), accepted slavery, and Christians would be persecuted if they were against that law... so, they just obeyed the law, BUT making a difference in the way they treated slaves, you forgot to see where the Bible told the masters to remember that they have also a Master in heaven!
It is said, too, that it could happen in the early church that a bishop be a slave, and his master be a lay man!!! That shows that Christians just treated everyone the same.

What I now is that Jesus loves me, and He does love YOU.

they don't......I used to be an atheist before but thankfully not now, 100 % believer now and the atheists here that have not converted yet are only here for one reason, to learn more about God because they are fence sitters still not sure if they want to jump in. REAL atheists like I used to be would never hang out in a place such as this that is full of religion. in their questions and answers they will deny it but that is only so their friends that see their questions an answers will not make fun of them.they will put up a very strong anti-God front but a front is all it really is.....100 % here are secretly fence sitters..no true atheists here so keep preaching, they really do want to hear it...... even the ones you are talking about....HOWEVER if you see violations of yahoo guidelines please report 100% of the abuses, they can sit on the fence but only decently !

Just remember that He loves you, He died so that you may live. Accept His love and forgiveness - it's a free gift but I suppose it will cost you too much. He loves you so much that He will let you make your own decisions even though they will hurt you.

Much of the information you have is incorrect. Read the book and get the truth. eg The people in Egypt trusted their god to look after them, the Israelites trusted their God. The Egyptian god did a great job, didn't he.

I am not of this faith BUT being ordained in a faith which DOES see this God as "evil" I can tell you that you are wasting your time trying to get any of it's faithful to quit being so BLIND.

The most popular answer I have gotten from christians about their God is that GOD can do anything he wishes as he is "God" and EVIL is not "evil" it is his WILL. If he tells his faithful to KILL it is not WRONG but an act of FAITH for you are getting rid of "evil."

As for women being oppressed, christian explaination from "leaders" I have confronted ALL have had the similar answer stating that it is because a WOMAN is the reason MAN fell from GRACE. To man and to God, a woman is weak in spirit and "inferior."

Some of these REASONS "is" why I am not a christian and will NEVER be one.......It is a religion built upon the same hypocrisies as Judaism.....

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

death is the penalty for all sin...in the OT death was given to those who sinned...thus all the killing...no mercy...

death is the penalty for all sin...in the NT Jesus dies for our sins giving every man opportunity to redeem his soul before he dies...thus there is no killing in the NT because of Christs death...but the judgment of death that all men deserve is waiting until their death...so mercy in reigning now...

until you can wrap your mind around this concept you will never understand the difference of the two...

You're clearly too angry to understand, but I'll try any way.

Many of these examples you cite are metaphors, parables, and stories, not facts from history. People did bad things, and then, in some cases hundreds of years later, claimed God directed them to do the bad things.

Why would you direct so much energy towards these things that make you so angry?

It's like sitting down to dinner, and screaming about the table cloth, and ignoring the actual food.

God loves you. That's the message of the Bible ... not the history lessons or ancient stories of long-dead people.

God loves you.

Godspeed.

For the preaching of the crosss is to them that perish foolishness, but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. -1 Corinthians 1:18.
We are told about people like you 2000 years ago.
Happy perishing.
BTW slaves are only mentioned once in the NT in reference to the whore of Babylon in Revelations. Get a proper Bible.
