do you interpret this to mean the 'Word on Life', the 'Word that Grows', or both?

Both....I have found life through the Word, and the Word continues to speak to me in new ways.

It is alive and it produces life...cool, huh?

nancy,

The Bible may be CALLED the "Living Word," but if it is, that's probably wrong.

There is only one place actually in the Bible that may call it that. It would have been hard to do so for most of the first century, since there was no Bible while the BIble was being written. That's why when Peter called what Paul wrote "Scriptures," the word originally is "graphe," which simply means "writings."

It is later people who call it "the living Word," but that's a bit imprecise.

In John 1:1, "The Word" obviously is alive and isn't the Bible. That "Word" "became flesh and dwelled among us," so the Living Word is Jesus, not the Bible.

That means that the Bible is much closer to what others have called, "The Word of God written." Jesus is the Word, the Bible is His Word written down for us to help us change our minds.

Now, when the Book of Hebrews (4:12) says that the Word of God is "alive and powerful and sharper than any twoedged sword," it is not known if it is talking about the written Word or the Living Word. It is likely that it is about the Word written, but since it doesn't say we have to be a bit careful.

It is just as appropriate to say that the verse talks about the Living Word as the Written.

If it is, though, what it says next illustrates the point the author is making: "and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." That is, since this Word is "alive" and "breathed out by God" (the literal meaning of "All Scripture is 'inspired' by God..."), if you read and learn and apply the written Word, by the work of God it becomes alive in you to reveale you to yourself, you to others, others to you, and all to God. So the Living part is God at work in the Word in you.

That means that the Bible still isn't actually "alive," but is the main means by which God works in us.

Scripture is the "Living Word of God" it is the same word that spoke the world into being, that created all things.

The same "Living Word" that spoke to the egg inside of Mary and Said to the human egg "Grow" (The Living Word of God fertilized that human egg).

Just as my son is part of me and part of his mother, Jesus is part of His Father and Part of Mary...

Thus...

1. Jesus is God (The Living Word) "The Way, The Truth and the Life".

2. Jesus is human and He suffered and died and rose from the dead and became the "Lamb of God" the sacrafice for our sins that God Himself provided.

The word of God doesn't change, we do.

It is alive because it is the word of God, and it pierces our souls and discerns the thoughts and intents of our hearts.
