Some cats do that from time to time. The male cat took advantage of the position your female was in and let her have it simply because he new he could. Since they have been together for a year I would say this is nothing to worry about. Cats do the darnest things at times.

Good luck

No, he's not trying to hurt her.

She was doing a "come and get it" pose by lying on stretched out on her back like that, and he took her up on it. It's a mutually-agreeable sexual foreplay sort of thing.

Even though she's spayed and he's neutered, something got them a little turned on. My bet is that there are tomcats outside your house, and maybe a female in heat too, and the sexual pheronomes are in the air. It even affected your cats.

This is mating and/or dominance behavior. It's completely normal, and may be done by two males, two females, or one of each when it's a question of dominance. It doesn't mean he was trying to harm her; he was just trying to establish his place in the pecking order, so to speak. This behavior also occurs in cats that are spayed/neutered. I'd leave them alone; the only one who might end up getting hurt is YOU; cats are STRONG when they want to be!

If she wasn't hurt, then he wasn't trying to hurt her. Believe me, if he wanted to harm your female, you wouldn't have been able to stop him. That said, this is a play behavior, a sort of feline version of rough-housing. Kittens do it all the time, and for these two cats to do it as adults shows that they're very close. Don't worry, he was just playing.

oh, and your female is more than capable of taking care of herself - if he gets too rough, she'll "bunny kick" him with her back feet and force him off.

As long as one of them isn't a kitten, then I don't think they will really hurt each other. Maybe they just have to work it out between them.
