In theory, he can stay out of the US for a year. But, if he doesn't want to be hassled when he comes back, he shouldn't stay longer than 6 months. If he does, he will have to do a lot of explaining.
In order to stay longer than a year -and up to two years-, he needs to get a special permit which he should have gotten BEFORE leaving the country. If he didn't and he stays over a year, he might lose his green card.

Green card means a PR status in a particular country while still holding the same passport i.e. his citizenship is still the same. So when he is visiting India on an Indian passport the immigration officials here are not bothered about his status as he is entering into India on a valid Indian passport so he can stay here indefinitely without any problem. What will happen to his green card status in that country is a different issue as your question is pertaining to stay in India.

Depends on the Visa 90 days or 6 months. I suggest you call the Embassy and they will tell you.
