Here in Mass it is a law but usually only used if you are stopped for another violation and are not wearing your seat belt. I totally disagree with those who stated, 'the law is the law'. We have our rights and freedoms and the government interferes in way to much of our lives. I wear my belt but not because it's the law but because it the smart thing to do. The government is not always correct and when they try to mandate how we live our lives we should all protest. One local city has banned the use of one type of cooking oil in all restaurants w/o any input from owners. What next, no one can eat at MacDonald's if there fat. Peace

Seatbelts do save lives when they are used. The fines in place are not designed to piss you off or violate your rights. Most people wear them because they know it's safer. As for the people who would rather not wear a seatbelt, the fine is a deterrent and they wear the seatbelt just to avoid the hassle of getting pulled over and receiving a fine. I know a few people who were in serious car accidents and are grateful that they were wearing their seatbelt at the time. Some still had injuries and one needed surgery, but all were happy to be alive and gave credit to wearing the seatbelt.
As inconvenient as it may be for you to wear a seatbelt, if it could be proven to you that a particular type of accident would kill or paralyze you if it occurred, would you wear the seatbelt then? It's a minor inconvenience for those with the preference to go beltless. It's a major inconvenience to have major injuries or an expensive funeral.
I always wear mine because I want as much protection as possible when driving.

It's also illegal in Minnesota. If an officer sees you driving down the road without a seatbelt on, you can be pulled over and ticketed. If you get pulled over for having a taillight out and they see you're not wearing a seatbelt, you can still get a ticket. And yes, seatbelts do save lives. They also keep insurance rates down in some areas. Stop being a prude and wear a seatbelt. It won't kill ya!

It's for your safety. If you get into a wreck, you won't go through the windshield if you're buckled in. Therefore, it's less of a chance of you dying.
But, they can't just pull you over if they don't see a seatbelt on, though. They have to pull you over for something else, disregard that, and then ticket you for not having your seatbelt on.

My solution is simple: change the law, so that it is legal to not wear a helmet or buckle your belt, if you are a legal adult. And if you're in an accident, not having a helmet or a seatbelt is the legal equivalent of a Do Not Resuscitate order: the EMT's get to ignore you, or triage you last, and your car insurance doesn't have to pay for your medical bills. That gives civil libertarians the choice they want, while making the cost explicit, and let's Darwin deal with the consequences.

i'm sorry that the shoulder belt hurts while it somewhat is for the era of your chest in case you're using yet you are able to desire to placed on your seatbelt properly. i'm advantageous which you will somewhat have slightly of chest soreness than getting ejected out of your vehicle in an twist of destiny and in all probability dieing or suffering considerable actual harm. The cop became into doing the best ingredient by using pulling you over and informing you of this and became into looking out on your risk-free practices.

Because the people in YOUR State made it against the Law NOT wearing a seatbelt. They could make it "against the law" -NOT to wear sunglasses in your car on a cloudy day- if they wanted to! "Choice" -has NOTHING to do with it. THAT's why you need to be CAREFULL what you vote "for"...-The MORE laws there are, the FEWER choices we have... :(

because it is against the law. You are free to not wear yours. Your also free to be ticketed for your actions. But I pose this question... Why would you ever do something so stupid as to not put on a seat belt. It takes about .3 seconds and really does not hinder anything you do in your car. Unless you like being horribly hurt in a mild accident.

You make no sense. Seat belts save lives and also cuts your insurance rates.
It has been a law in Texas for about ten years. More and more states are doing it. You get a ticket because it is against the law!!
Nothing to do with the government.it is a state thing.
