My VW New Beetle is awesome in all kinds of weather. Last winter's snow didn't even phase it. I made it to work the morning after a blizzard with 4 inches of snow on the ground, while my partner who drives a Jeep didn't make it in.
Snow tires were a great addition for the demanding winter.
Stability and visibility were very consistent.
This car is also hard to spin around, because it lacks a long hood&trunk.

With SUV's it depends on what you want to spend. I have a 2006 Acura MDX that more than surpassed all of my expectations in every category so far.

have a look at the mazda cx7.

Awesome handling, 244 horsepower, 258 lb-ft torque, available all wheel drive, looks like it costs 40k but starts under 25 grand.

can't beat that with a stick.
